In your set-up, wouldn't the spoong run down the filter/breather hose and into the filter]

Spoog would most likely follow the most direct route and gravity.

This looks like a nice mod but wouldn't the "most direct route" for vaporized oil and blow-by gases be the non-pressurized filter end, instead of the plugged drain end?

I'll let you know if it does but as Armymedic mentions above, the line to the filter curves up. If it doesn't condense at this point around the T, then some of the vaporized oil may go down the filter leg.

I just emptied the spooge out of my line. No evidence of any junk at the filter. Of course, there are plenty of ways other people have run their lines that are different than how I ran mine.
Here is an example on buellxb.com:

Finally got my updated inner air box (2007+) so I'm almost ready to go. I know this is prob a stupid question, but what am I missing? Trying to figure why I need a filter at the end. Is there some sort of negative pressure?

The breather tubes T with one end as a catch for fluids and such; the breather filter T's off the line for venting gases and to stop dust and other particulate matter from getting sucked back up in. Of course there is some speculation that the gases only go one way. There is more reading on this at the Buellxb link in the post above. Give it a good read before doing the mod. I think most questions you may have are answered in that thread. My experience is that my bike runs smoother since the mod.

Doesn't anyone have any concerns about vastly limited venting capacity with this mod? You're replacing two fairly large capacity hoses in a negative pressure environment with one smaller diameter hose vented to atmosphere. I'd like to do the mod but that's a lot of venting through a small hose. I'm concerned about that.

That could effect oil flow.
Maybe bigger lines and fittings? What could it hurt?

+1.
When I had my Uly. I had it running with the airbox top off and those 2 vents were huffing & puffing like an old train. No way I would have gone to anything smaller.

Seems like this thread came to a screeching halt. I'm waiting for somebody out there smarter than me ( should be a large pool of candidates) to tell us why this won't really be an issue

My first question would be how much negative pressure actually exists - there is a pretty significant amt square inches of holes in the inner airbox and the airbox cover

Any takers?

I would expect worse performance and rougher engine running in that case but just the opposite has been my experience. It is also a reversible mod.

Of course there is some speculation that the gases only go one way.

Perhaps because this is the way how flatter valves work.

I believe Al @ American Sportbike reported a couple of horsepower gain from this mod. More gain than loss because of un-contaminated intake charge.

Bumpin this baby up....

I did this mod recently on my 09, maybe 400 miles ago, because I thought it was a good idea that couldn't hurt. The only thing interesting to report is that I have checked the drain hose twice only to find a tiny amount of water fall out-maybe 2 or 3 drops' worth. Also, I checked the vent filter tonite while it was dark. Engine running, 60 degrees outside or so, and I see steam escaping the filter, like it was a cup of hot tea. Didn't concern me, really. Anyone have comments on this?

Well, I may be the odd-ball...but I had re-routed my breather to one of those nice catch-cans and K&N filters, but I recently switched it back to the stock configuration.

I also got the vapors that Portero was talking about, which produced a burnt oil smell after the vapors contacted the engine. I also found that the tubing did not fit as well onto the K&N filter as I would have wanted, thus causing a little oil condensation to escape, making a mess (albeit a relatively small mess) of the left side of the engine area.

The bottom line for me is that even though I am giving up a possible 2-3 percent HP gain, I prefer to not smell the oil vapor and to not having an oil mess to clean up all the time. Call me crazy!

pre 66 chryslers ran a tube that put spooge in the atmosphere..plenty of sludge in the old motors...
later models used a pvc valve and burned the spooge in the carb...no power loss, no sludge and longer lasting motors...ill stick to the stock set-up.. my opinion only..

Portero, I get the "tea cup" steam too along with some oil smell. for me it is worth it not to have oil in the air box and it runs better at low RPM. i like it so far and have about the same miles as you since the mod.

I haven't checked for or seen any steam yet but I did get rid of the bolt at the bottom of the drain tube at the bottom to let the engine breath easier.
