Anyone been following GSpots long running Uly issues on ADVrider ? I've had my share of failures on my '08(blown shock in Yukon & broken pawl spring, stuck in 5th gear, in Oregon) but all were easily resolved. He appears to be down to the final glitch of an upper range RPM flat spot (missed the Gspot?) Anyway - curious if any of the supremely erudite BWB folks have ideas for a Ulybrother in need ? Haven't seen any "cries for help" on this site, but coulda missed it. |

Hey Rotorhead - (I used to be one of those...waayy back on CH-34s - Baddest sounding motor on the planet @ start up!) Anyway - for some reason on my daughters computer I can't pick up links or forward emails so...It's on the 'Beasts' section of ADV, on the 3rd page, half way down. link is: "08 ULYSSES interesting findings". GSpot was questioned about going on BWB but found search mode cumbersome. Rode to the coast today. Damn near summer here, 60* and sunny glorious fall red leafy weather. |

I have followed it. I know he has defended the dealership, but from the story I have not been impressed. I am glad he is riding and enjoying his bike now. I don't know what the problem is because it is an odd problem. I have not heard of too many people complaining of a dead spot at those RPM ranges. To me something is not tuned right. ECMSpy does not work on '08 and newer bikes. Too bad, to me its a fuel/air mixture issue. |

I'd love to help the guy ,being a NYer myself, but it seems he has an 08 with the 08 surge. 06 and 07 have it at 3000 RPM. I would take it at 4200 plus I dont spend alot of time in the rpm range. But i'm sure ECMSPY 3 will be out soon enough to help him in the spring. But then he still may not do it being "under warranty" and his willingness to not ride the bike. If he didn't have a back up bike this would have been over much quicker. The RPM range he's complaining about is right where the air fuel ratio leans out and timing advances. The only thing I'd change is the timing mechanically. (Message edited by rotorhead on October 26, 2008) |

There is nothing with ECMspy in the works, the project is dead for now. |

DANG! Guess I have to keep my 06 FOREVER! BTW I'm retarded for think you can adjust the 08's static timing, he's screwed. (Message edited by rotorhead on October 27, 2008) |

Is the "dead spot" in the upper range the same that mine has at 3,000? |

Ft_bstrd, your dead spot is the race pipe. Dyno runs can show it. I just wish we had a good ECMspy for the DDFI3 bikes that way we could play around and figure out what the EPA did to our bikes now. |

Reading that thread made my brain hurt...wow. I feel for the guy, but have to wonder. "Significant" flat spot means so many different things to so many different people. He rode it from NY to the rockies and back - how "significant" could it really be? I'm gonna have to go ride my '06 now, and run some errands...just to make myself feel better |

Well with the way my 08 starts to take off between 4-5k any flat spot would feel "significant" to me. I am just glad my motor feels so good. The only time it feels rough is if I have been running up around 90+mph and slow down. I can really notice some vibes then. |

this is not an isolated case, there have been numerous 08 owners complaining about the same type of issues on this forum... my 08 scg was from hell... my 08 uly runs good...my scg was an early build date, as his was...the uly is a late build... some small detail may have been changed.. i have to give him credit for sticking with it... my dealer was excellent, but ran out of options... customer service suggested that i go to a few other dealers and get their opinions... yeah buddy!!! if a car had the same problems, it would be an easy candidate for the lemon law.. i got so pizzed off with customer service and their corporate type answers, that i traded it for a roadking and believe it or not, bought a uly too... ive owned as many buells as anyone, but i think the factory needs to step up to the plate on this type of issue... if you have an 08 that runs good, be thankful, as there are a bunch that dont... |

Well Hell...guess I'd better thank my lucky stars my 08 runs strong through the entire RPM range. A bit of a stumble in the low end periodically, but found the primary adjustment to be the larger contributor to "low end jerks". That could be the name of a band too. j |

Ft_bstrd, your dead spot is the race pipe. Dyno runs can show it. No, it's the fuelling/timing combo. As long as I don't linger at 3,000 I don't notice a flat spot in torque. It's only when I idle right at 3,000 that I get the studder. |

I have the stock pipe on an '07, and I get the 3000 rpm 'hiccup', especially when the bike is cool. On the plus side, it has either gotten better with the miles (23,000 now), or I avoid dwelling at that RPM. |

I was able to acquire a Buell Pro-Series muffler and put it on my 2007 Uly. With a Direct Link, it was Dyno tuned by the guys that built and tuned the Pikes Peak XB12STT that took second in this years Race to the Clouds. They tuned out stumble at low RPM, increased mid-range, but over all I lost power at low rpm and peak ranges. It sounds awesome as all get out, and the minor loss is negligible, with more power in the usable range, 3,500 to 5,000. It is also considerably lighter, yet being shorter, the pulley wants to cut into the right side exhaust port so the muffler had to be lowered about 0.20" by using some shim stock under the rear clamp brace. Still, all the cost, unavailability of the Pro-Series muffler, dyno tuning, Direct Link, only to get sound improvements... My suggestion, unless you are doing track days and living at high rpm (watch the reliability of that pushrod motor wane) you can't beat the gated valve exhaust on a XB12 motor for overall drivability. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't like it. ~jammer |
