· Enhanced Air Cooling As soon as you turn off a motorcycle, the hot oil begins to break down, potentially leading to engine damage. Unless, that is, that motorcycle is a Buell. The thermostatically controlled fan continues to cool the oil even after you pull the key. It also has you covered if you happen to get stuck in traffic. It’s one more thing we’ve done to keep the Thunderstorm engine primed for top performance. I found the above blurb on the Buell Uly web site. LINK: http://www.buell.com/en_us/bikes/adventure/XB12X/f eatures.asp I never knew....""As soon as you turn off a motorcycle, the hot oil begins to break down, potentially leading to engine damage."" Also, I thought the fan cooled the air-cooled engine, not the oil. . |

It cools the rear cylinder/head which has oil in it. |

Is there that much oil that gets left in the rear cylinder head after shut down. Doesn't the oil drain back down to the tank? |

Yes Johnny it does drain down. But have you ever seen the inside of an old bar-b-que? Some of the oil hangs onto the surfaces of the head, and start to coke up the surface just like the fat does that spatters and drips into the bar-b-que. So the idea is to cool it down as fast as possible to keep that from happening in your Buell. Husky |

It’s one more thing we’ve done to keep the Thunderstorm engine primed for top performance. I have been inside the motor and heads. Sounds like more buell BS from anony to me. The RSS will actually allow the fan to draw more cool air because it's intake is away from the hot exhaust system in an engine off, non moving situation. The oil will drain back to the sump pretty quick when the hot engine is turned off. (Except for the puddle of oil that remains trapped in the HD/Buell valve guide seal pocket cavity) around the valve. Buell marketing should take a cut in pay, and let the additional funding go to RD/PD NPD and customer feedback activities. But what do I know. I have only spent thousands of dollars above the price of the uly, to make it perform as it should have from the factory. |
