After selling my ’93 PD Beemer last winter, I surveyed large cc adventure bikes and settled on the Ulysses, and the two new F800GSs. Spring has arrived (at least here in SC) and the Ulysses won by default. The GSs are no-shows and if the dollar keeps sliding, they will be prohibitively expensive, especially after farkling. I was able to get a very low-mileage ’08 Ulysses with bags for under $10K (thanks gatlinburger!) and take a 700 mile shake-down trip. My take after 15 years on GS Beemers:
Pros:
1. Power where you need it.
2. That wonderful sound when you
twist the throttle!
3. Gas mileage (upper 40’s on the
first 70-80 mph tanks)
4. Excellent handling
5. No valve-adjusting, no chain-lubing, &
no worries re expensive, non-roadside
repairable shaft destruct

Cons:
1. Deceptively fast (will get you
unplanned meetings with the highway
constabulary if not careful

Engine heat was a non-factor but it looks like I’m going to have to learn a lot more about Buell wheel bearings. I’m currently researching throttle locks. Anyone with a Kakao or Throttlemeister know if they fit an Ulysses with heated grips? Thanks.

No problem with the Kaoko's, they work great...with or without the heated grips. On the other hand, putting them on ProTaper bars took some effort!

I'm not sure exactly...it was about six months ago that I got them. I ordered them from Adventure Workshop, and I think that it only took a week or two.

Just FYI - Ive had my Kaoko's on order for a few weeks now. Mfg'd in South Africa and they're apparently a bit behind on shipment. (Elephant stampede?) Hope we get 'em before the snow melts. But based on other reviews, and my friends 07 Uly experience with them...perhaps worth the wait. They also match up with the stock handguards.

I've have one of these thumb locks:

I just used a tiny screw into the control box to stabilize it.

Works Great!

That is the cheapest cruise control I could find. It had a huge list of models it was for. Not a clue what brand or model.

It really doesn't matter what model, since I used the screw. The only difference between models was how the device is secured on the bike, this one had 2 tabs that were supposed to secure to throttle cables. I just snapped those off.

That is the NEP throttle lock, which is what I used prior to getting the Kaoko system. It is cheap, and does exactly what it was designed for...but I finally decided to spend the big bucks in order to have a cleaner appearance.

He is a write up on the NEP install that I did last year.

Has anybody heard anything new on the Dark Horse Moto throttle locks?

I use the NEP also. The only concern I had was with the friction between it and the grips. I put a very thin handmade plastic washer between them and no problem.

On my XB9 I have a vista cruise like Ftb, but I had to grind down the inside (grip side) to fit better next to the lip on the throttle sleeve.

I secured it like ftb and mike5000 with a screw on the bottom into the controls. Works great!!!

By the way, if have symtec heated grips and the vista cruise works well together.

Just got off the phone from adventurer's workshop about the kaoko throttle locks and they said they expect them in by the end of March. So I just thought I'd keep those of you whom ordered them recently about what kind of time frame to expect.
