So, this is probably a dumb question, but the Uly is my first new vehicle, so I want to make sure I do the right thing, both from keeping the Uly running good, and in terms of making sure I keep a good service history should I come to sell it at some point. The dilema is that at the moment the bikes at 4.6K, so 400 miles off it's 5K service. At christmas, unless the winter turns bad, I'll probably head up to Scotland on the bike to see my parents. This'll put on 800 miles minimum. And I'm unlikely to get much more than 50 to 60 miles before then. So - should I get the bike serviced now before the trip, or should I hang on and get it done when I come back? Or am I worrying about a non-issue? |

I did my 1000 mile at 650 miles before a big trip. I would get it serviced now. It is important to make sure your ride is always at its best when traveling long distances. I got a quote of $500 USD for the 5000 mile service. Everything in the manual seems like it is a straight forward adjustment. Does it impact warranty if I do self service? |

It voids the warranty if you have the service done at even 1 mile over 5000, even if you do the work yourself. And here's the kicker, the work has to be done stateside. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on November 27, 2007) |

Ouch. My 1K service was done at a little over 1K but no one seemed to be upset by that (I got it serviced at the HD-Buell garage I bought it at). Guess I'll get it in early then. Ta for the advice. |

Voids the warranty????? I had my 1K service done at 2200mi. Not a word was said and they covered warranty issues after that. I am now on my second Uly. (Totaled my first one) and have not taken it in for any dealer service, it is now at 5600mi. I do my own service according to the manual and all I do is keep a log book and receipts of what I did and when. My 5K service cost me about $35USD. If the engine blows up tomorrow it will be covered under warranty as well as everything else on the bike. |

That sounds like bull on the warranty. I had my 1k done at 1400 and 5K done at 6500, and I had no issues with anything warranty. |

I did my own 5K service and Buell still fixed the bike under warranty. I even told the factory that I was messing with the timing to fix the ping. They said the only way I would void the warranty is if I did something that caused a failure. |

You guys are too easy. I was just funnen. I didn't think for a minute anyone would take my earlier post seriously. Well, I gotta go now and attach my ULY to the hot air balloon for the winter. |

Way too easy! I fly my hot air balloon ALL YEAR because I'm way better than any other Buell owners... nostalgic! |

On the warranty subject. I bought an additional 5 years extended warranty with my '08 Uly. I plan to run Mobile 1 20w50 (Syn) in the primary AND engine. (Maybe 10W40 in the engine during the winter months) Does anyone know if this is a "certified" oil for use in both/either. I'd hate to have "caused" a failure by using unapproved lubrication. |

Well, fun aside, thanks for leaving me more confused than when I started! |

Dougal, I recommend having the service performed early. This is only my opinion, but here is my reasoning. Your Uly is still getting broken in and parts are wearing together. This means that bits of metal have been accumulating in the oil - bits of metal, no matter how small they may be, are still bits of metal that can increase the wear on parts. At least compared to fresh oil with no particles. So, I would say that getting those particles flushed out and replaced with new oil would be a sensible way to err on the safe side. There will be less wear in the following 5000 miles, meaning less particles in the oil, so it would be safer to put the extra mileage on between the 5K to 10k interval than on the 1k to 5k interval, if you follow what I am saying. I'm not sure I can explain this in a way that is easily understandable, but here it goes: If you do it early now, you will have the accumulation of the break-in debris from 3.6k flushed out with the oil. Then if you run it until the 10k service, you will have an extra 400 miles of wear, but since the wear lessens (hence less debris) as the miles increase, this will mean less debris in those "extra" 400 miles in the 10k service. Or you could split the 400 mile difference and do the 10k service at 9.8, then be back on schedule at the 15k service. Or you could perform an extra oil change in there somewhere - seems a little overkill perhaps, but would be relatively cheap insurance if you are really paranoid about it! Basically I think that the 5k service is more critical than the 10k and later services because of the wear and tear that the break-in debris in the oil can cause. Hope that helps a little. -Ron |

Hdbobwithabuell why bother using anything other than Formula+ in the primary. It's cheap and its what they designed specifically for that transmission and primary chain. This is unlike the engine oil which was not designed specifically for this engine. |
