I think that if I was needing to replace a tranny on an XB and had the required funding, I'd seriously consider purchasing a complete engine/tranny assembly, either a good used one or a new one, and swapping it into the bike. Then I'd have all kinds of time for liesurely/enjoyable tinkering with a soon to be higher performance and/or customized engine.

Thats what i said when i looked at it
that is why i dropped the motor out of the bike and it happens the harley mechanic had only just finished one and did mine in his spare time if i had done it through the shop i would have been looking at $7000.00 NZ approx $4000.00 US hence was happy to do the grunt work

Its easy to get the primary assembly apart so you can see the shifter pawl and some bolts. It's hard to split the cases.

I'd do the first before making any decisions regarding the second.

"HD tool part #!!!!!"

That's why I just pulled my engine and stripped it to the cases. I had a Harley guy split the cases..

It is absurd how many specialty tools are needed for these engines.

Alot of good mechanics will manufacture or improvise most of the special tools. It's a fairly daunting task just looking at the SM but H-D have made it easy by not requiring shimming etc and the thrust washers. The transmission on the XB is a walk in the park compared to some of the Japanese gear riding around. I can't talk for the new buell heli-gear trans cause I never worked on one of those. As stated above, it all mechano stuff till you get to spliting the cases and pressing out hte main and counter shafts. Once your there it's just time nothing too hard.

Hey Jim, if you need a lock-bar, e-mail me your address and I'll send you one. I'm pretty I have some scrap laying around to make a few more.

Have you seen this thread?

You might be able to tell if it's a shift pawl problem without taking the rotor and clutch off.

"I'm pretty [sure] I have some scrap laying around to make a few more."

Uh... based on the tangent this thread is off on, I wanted to clarify that the word 'sure' should have come after the word 'pretty' in the above statement.

I'm not that pretty, really.

Who are you kidding, you're HOT!

How you didn't get picked up by some lonely trucker when you were stranded on the shoulder of Rt.129 is beyond me.

Some Harley guys did hang out with me for awhile when I was stranded. They kind of looked like you, Saintly. You would have definitely won a beard contest in that group, though. They were stopped on the side of the road when Barker and I thundered past them at speed on our way up, and they were still there when I coasted back down... out of gas. They told me the sound of the bikes as we passed by was glorious. They were pretty stoked to see (and hear) Buells out there.
