Bike: '03 XB9
Problem: Locked in 5th gear. Occurred on spirited ride. Rider went through the gears; when he tried to down shift, it wouldn't. Clutch feels normal at the lever. Can't get shift lever to move at all.

All thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks Glitch. Is it hard to replace? Expensive or not so much?

I think to fix the shifter drum you gotta split the cases.

To do ANYTHING to the trans you will be splitting cases.

Sounds like a shift drum to me too.

I haven't been inside my XB's tranny yet, but from the service manual it looks like you can get to the shifter shaft and the ratchet arms by pulling the primary cover. It's probably worth the pulling the primary to poke around before you commit to splitting the cases.

How many miles are on the bike?

Really, my only complain on the engine is the lack of the trapped door. They need to put that back or redesign the case to where it won't have to be split. More like one piece.

I think it has about 28K miles on it. It's U4euh's bike. He thinks it might be a low fluid issue that caused something to heat up. I hope it turns out to be a simple fix for him.

Fats, I would have loved to have been there to see and ride with ya'll. Maybe next time. I like the bike. Just getting to know it after about a thousand miles since I picked it up last week. Fast, quiet, comfortable, air cooled, and nice and stable; It will do. I hope this "tranny" issue works out o.k. for Jim.

Jim - I know when the M2 needs tranny oil changed, it will find many false neutrals, especially between 3rd and 4th. I have never had it stuck in gear though. If I can help you with anything let me know.

Check the clutch basket before you pull the trans.

hi re tranny issue
sounds like the same i had with mine it is the drum, selecter fork there is no inspection trap door, pull motor and split cases, the 06 model up now has the trap door.
mine was from previous owner after finding the gears, cogs to be blue either run out of oil or low oil, mine changed down from 5th to fourth there was nothing, stopped finally engaged a gear which was 1st then 2nd could not engage any other gear road approx 8o kms in 2nd gear to get home but trans locked caused more damage
was able to fix took 11 months and $3000NZ approx $1300 US to fix.
i removed motor and took the motor to tech to fix and reinstalled motor to keep costs down.
if it has run low on oil and has overheated the motor will need pulling to replace drum and selector.
my 2003 9r had 15,000kms

Well if you gotta split the cases, might as well do a little performance stuff.

Mike--We all decided you needed a faster bike. : D

Jim--I was worried when you pulled it off the side stand and the leaking stopped.

"...the 06 model up now has the trap door."

Is this true? If so, a great step forward and major decision maker regarding my next Buell purchase. HD eliminated the trap door with the new rubber mounted XLs in 2004 as well which I always thought was a big mistake. Anyone know for sure if the 06s and up have the trap door?

Well, big mistake on my part! I checked the level after installing the new cable. It was level with the bottom of the inspection cover, BUT it was on the sidestand. Well, looks like a long winter, just in time for riding season.

I would love to be proved wrong, but I don't think any XB's have trap door trannys.

I have not been in mine either, but even without the trap door you can get at some important parts. The shifter pawl, the detent plate, the shifter drum pins, and various nuts holding various important parts together.

More then one person has had a "think I have to split the cases" scenarios, only to find out it could be handled by pulling the primary cover, then the clutch / stator bell / primary chain as a unit.

It takes a couple big sockets, and some aluminum scrap to make a locking tool, but it's not rocket science to pull it apart.

I think the Helicon has a cartridge tranny...

Jim-

In case you need it, I have the actual sprocket locking tool for pulling the primary drive. I ordered it a few years ago when replacing the detent plate on my M2. It took so long for it to come in that I ended up using a 10mm combination wrench as a locking tool while the factory tool was on order.

Let me know if you want to borrow it, I'm always looking for an excuse to ride towards the Uhwarrie anyway.

I made a tool that works pretty well. Just got some 1/8" aluminum flat bar at Home Depot and doubled it up with a couple of bolts. Then "sharpened" then ends to engage the gears.

Try not to use steel, as I've head it can hurt the gears.

The manual was very good.

Don't try to disassemble the clutch pack (another f*^&*%ing special tool). You can just remove it in one piece.

There were a few folks that had their name on one but didn't pick them up. I don't know if Danny still has them or not. I plan to ask for BadWeB names at the Demo table this year, we can always catch anyone who missed getting their's last Badness.
