Done!

Well it turns out it was the battery...
My voltmeter decided to commit suicide so I could not test it, but the battery charger basically told me that it will not charge it...
So with the battery completely removed, I connected it to another battery and it fired up the first crank over
I am very much relieved, and frustrated with myself all at the same time...

Well of to the battery store!

Again many thanks for all the advice and support!

The title is going to be the next step...
But may have to wait till my next paycheck
since it has not been registered for so long they are probably going to fine me to hell and back...
So I am prepared to part with several hundred dollars
Also depending on if I get a stupid tech or an ass, I may get away with the exhaust I have on there now...
If not I will have to make one of the mufflers from the 750 fit...

This thing is so much fun
its a bit too loud though
I guess the updated to-do list is as follows:
-title/registration
-tires
-fork rebuild
-sprockets
-windscreen
-change the oil/filter again and again until its clear
-flush the cooling system
-adjust primary, cam chain, and valve clearance
-aluminum radiator fan
-new leather on the seats

And a fantasy list:
Strip the thing down and
-Get all the steel parts powder coated silver
-Get the engine cases powder coated glossy black
-get the headers/pipes sandblasted and coated
-re valve the front fork
-new rear shock
-fiberglass body work
-pod filters
-scrap the emissions crap

don't put pods on it, it won't run right. don't scrap the emissions for the same reason. the bike was designed to run a certain way with those things on it, take em off and you will have a hard time tuning it. as far as the title, if you have a bill of sale with a recent sale date, MOST places won't charge you for someone elses back taxes.

Perhaps that is a good idea to leave that alone, especially now that I have run into some more trouble...
I put on about 20 miles on it yesterday, and after stopping by the shop and borrowing their "90 degree carb tool" I adjusted the pilot jet as I just eyeballed them when I was rebuilding the carbs...
But now there is a new problem the idle has become cyclical...
Once the bike is fully warmed up it will alternate between 1500 and 2000 rpm in a very consistent pattern...
So this leaves me thinking:
-intake leak
-carb sync
-improper pilot jet adjustment (factory 2 turns out I used 2 1/4 because of the exhaust)
-bowl fuel level
I wonder if there is a petcock out there that is the traditional kind (not the vacuum type) that will bolt up, I do not trust this one...

Well upon further inspection I think the cooling system may be the culprit...
It started right up, after releasing the choke the idle was too low...
So I dialed it up a little getting it into its preferred 1300rpm range and it was dead on in that range.
After a few spins around the block, the coolant temperature went up and the idle slowly started climbing (directly proportional to the temperature), but it still remained rock solid.
I am not sure where the temperature needle should be during normal running, but when it got "hot" 12 o'clock mark (or lack thereof) the idle again increased to I dialed it down a little but this time it would idle at 1500 and oscillate between 1500 and 1800. If I set the idle lower (to the 1300 mark) she would run, but the rpms would slowly drop and she would stall...
Quite curious

Update:
It turns out that the fan sensor activates at 97 C, and that halfway point is somewhere near that and that is far from overheating... right?

Well I am pleased to report that doing something on this thing was not unnecessarily painful...
I synced the carbs today, and its running better...
I will check/replace the plug wires and fiddle with the cooling system tomorrow...
Now that I think about it 97C is getting up there.

97c is about 207f, i don't know what the normal range is, but that is at least nice and warm.

Well the video never happened, primarily because I just finished up the chain...
The o-rings have started to come out, so no more riding until I can buy the sprockets.
So instead I rebuilt the forks...

First she had to be undressed, sexy...



Its so nice not the have a nest of wires under there:

Luckily a 1/2 inch extension fit rather well:



She grew four legs...
This turned out to be surprisingly stable






The rotors cleaned up rather nicely:

The anti-dive assemblies brake-system to suspension system transition. Rather crusty but most of it just blew away...

Air "bridge"/filler terminal for the forks, this was somewhat scary taking off... That tube in the middle is really soft and the collars did not want to budge...



The valve assembly. I thought this thing looked really nifty, like a miniature jet engine...

First attempt at removing the lower bolt, this works on a ninja 250 but not this sucker...



To spare myself the trouble of waiting till the next day and spending a fortune at the dealer, I made my own tool...
Its a bent steel pipe that has been ground to fit inside a spark plug socket and then put into a big vise...
I was considering welding the socket on but decided to try it out with just a press fit, and surely it worked.

The new fork seal, its an interesting construction and they claim to be "leak-proof" I am skeptical, we shall see...



At this point apparently I forgot to take more pictures, but everything cleaned up nicely and came together really well...
Took it around the block and there is one heck of a difference.

I think I may have discovered the source of the problem with regards to the idle...
Overheating.
Once I got all the fairings off, I checked the coolant and the system is in serious need of a bleed. There is a huge air pocket at the top of the radiator.

that is what was wrong w/ mine... it wouldn't idle correctly and it would get over heated FAST!! get that thing on the road where it belongs

It sure does, as much as I need one!
If only I had the sprockets... soon very soon!
As for the cooling system, I had a chance to get very personal with a very large cooling system the other day.
The cooling system on the 92 F150 failed in 100 degree weather...
It turned out the thermostat blew, and so it cut the cooling system so all it would do is just boil off the coolant in the engine and not circulate it through the radiator...

So I will be draining the coolant out of the ninja replacing the thermostat (or just getting rid of it all together), and while I am in there I will adjust the tappets.

Not to mention I finally get to work again starting Monday!

I had a chance to dig in and check the new plugs and valve clearance.
The engine is still running quite lean:



But at least all the cylinders are running equally lean:



First I will fiddle more with the pilot jet currently set to 2 1/4 turns out (the stock is 2), if that does not aid this issue I will order the jet kit (which includes stage 1,2,3 so I will have plenty to play with).
I also checked the valve clearance, and all the valves are in check (not to mention everything in there is nice and clean/unworn).



I also drained the cooling system and to my delight, everything is in superb shape (no corrosion, scaling, rust, perfect). I also checked the thermostat, which also worked as designed. Now its just a matter of getting out to the hardware store and picking up some o-rings.

Don't take out the thermostat, you need that in there to keep the temp in a constant range, if you remove the thermostat it will run too cold & screw up your fuelling.

I have no intention of taking out the thermostat, I just wanted to make sure that it is working properly... But thanks for the heads up.
Also I hope that you are feeling better and recovering fast, and hopefully the frame is straight and those inverted forks will end up on the m2.
