The toughest sport I've ever participated in (and coached) is wrestling. Not that fake stuff, but real folkstyle, freestyle and greco-roman wrestling. You'll not experience a tougher 6 min. than when you are on the mat with a worthy opponent.

I personally started in elementry school, continued through middle school, highschool and college. I was an alternate for the All-Army Wrestling team and built a pretty decent HS program in my area.

I have respect for all athletes and their sports. (But I acknowledge that not all sports make for good viewing- wrestling is one of them.)

Ok - Bring on the homophobic comments...

I've heard them for 30+ years.

There are few better conditioned or stronger atheletes than "real" wrestlers.

2% body fat and the ability to go full out at 100% of maximum heartrate for 6 minutes buys you that ability.

That is why so many of the Ultimate Fighter folks are former wrestlers. Add in martial arts, and you become one really bad mofo.

(Former 152, 160, and 171 weight class, btw. ;))

My son trains at a Gracie Jiu Jitsu studio. Ralph Gracie works with him direct from time to time. Those guys at the studio are great. Nice guys, concerned about excellence. They don't hand out the belt until you earn it. Real pleased.

But maaaaan is it expensive!

Wrestling had a big impact on my life...did it all through high school and college. Ironically the biggest benefit it had was not the physical conditioning but rather afterwards the mental discipline both personally and for work.

What I liked about it was that the sport was highly individual but also had teamwork aspects at tournaments and the end of season ratings.

Now yer talking!! I wrestled in HS and JC then got taslked into coaching by my former coach and my HS principal. My brother and I took a HS with a 14 man team and in 5 years they were in the top 10 at the state tournament(in CA there is no 1A,2A etc)and of course the kids expected the coaches to wrestle, so I was still wrestling freestyle until I was about 35 y.o. Then started a kids program in my hometown where my son wrestled, he went on to win state greco title and 3rd in freestyle the same year.Wrestling takes incredible commitment to do well and the training has stayed with me all my life. A wrestler will always do well in a streetfight and so many took to the UFC when it started and did very well.
Mixed martial arts is up there, only other sports worth talking about involve motorcycles.

You may get a shot or two off, but if a skilled wrestler gets their mitts on you, the fight will be over fairly shortly.

It's hard to throw punches when you are choking on your own armpits.

Take a wrestler who can also trade punches, and it's gonna get ugly.

Add Aikido, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu, and you really don't want to get on that person's bad side.

Wrestlers, pah!

Rugby is exactly like wrestling but you start 20 yards apart and run at each other flat out first - and then you wrestle after you've had the biggest collision you can make.

Then you drive them into the bare ground as hard as you can.

Mats?

Turn it up!

As a kid I played in the streets of LA, where you played Smear the Queer - (whoever has the ball gets dog-piled)it was fun though a bit rough by mom standards - from the age of 5 to 13 on pavement - that and basketball where it in my hood - walk around with a bat and it will get confiscated by the cops - lol - and football had too many rules - though the game shares rules with football.
Yeah - studying the arts isn't the simple inexpensive hobby it used to be - lol

There is nothing like full contact Bronx tackle basketball. Kind of like a cross between IFC and lacrosse, played on asphalt of course.

You want a tough mans game.....One word. Curling. Pussies need not apply. . 44lb stones, ice, old men and alcohol make for a dangerous situation indeed. And the sweeping.....man I'm breaking a sweat just thinking about it.

We used to play hockey on the local ponds, show up with a six pack(in the snow), skates, puck, and a stick. Would play until the pucks or beer were gone. A friend showed up, no skates, but wanted to play. He didn't last too long as he pulled the same manuever as the guy above. Talked to him a few days later-spent the night in the hospital with a severe concusion. Oops!

If I want to get hurt or bleed, all I have to do is get up in the morning, or go ride a motorcycle or something.
Checkers is the game for me.
But I am acquainted with a (former?) world champion beer barrel thrower. I don't think they throw them at each other though.

Our bodies are pretty much the same,....we only bend in certain directions...naturally anyway.

Bushkazi - Afghanistan's national sport.

Fields can be as large as a kilometer. They did outlaw the carrying of swords and daggers during the contests - but not whips.

I like simple rules.

A headless calf is placed in the starting circle at one of the field. The horsemen try to pick up the carcass, ride to the other end of the field, circle a flag pole, return to the starting end, dropping the carcass in a circle designated for each team. The opposing team tries to prevent them from doing so and tries to get possession of the carcass in order to do the same.
