An important FYI for SuperTrapp users. On a long trip recently, my SuperTrapp pipe literally fell apart. The welds broke at the inlet/canister connection. I was able to keep the pipe together by constantly eyeing it, but at one point it seperated itself about 1.5 inches! When I got home, Supertrapp was good enough to send me a replacement with no questions asked, which is appreciated. The timing was good in that they had just completed testing on a new, one piece unit which promises to be much more durable.

Upon installation last night, it is indeed a great fit and seemingly nice unit. However, upon inspection of the OLD pipe, the 1.5 inch of seperation I observed during the ride damned near came completely apart! Can you say...Catapult accident? If you recall, the Buell race pipe just went through a recall recently because of this potential. SuperTrapp has no plans for such a recall.

Please be aware!

Don is absolutely right.

I have had three broken SuperTrapp IDS mufflers, and I have been pole-vaulted twice. The second time it ripped the muffler completely off, tore my Z-bracket and dented my PM wheel in back.

I'm glad they have re-engineered the thing, but that doesn't help all of the current owners. They really need to have a total recall on that piece of crapp.

Buyer Beware!

Are you guys using the Supertrapp with the original header?
Did it break at the inlet to the can in front. I am using a Supertrapp with the race header, and fabricated a better rear mount but used the race kit front mount. I'll probably fab a safety wire for the front of the can. I didn't trust the front mount on the orginal that I had as it had a stress failure with no too many miles on it

Supertrapp is replacing all of their old-style mufflers with the new style can for free, according to both the X1 Files and a poster at ATC. The poster at ATC quoted the representative at Supertrapp as saying "we've got to get all those old cans off the street before someone gets hurt," or something to that effect. Call (216)265-8400x121.

Be prepared to wait awhile for the replacement. They told be to not even bother sending my back until after the first of the year. Even then, I was told to expect to wait 6 weeks!

At least they're finally realizing there is a problem. The rep also told be that I didn't have to return "all the disks. If you know what I mean". I guess I'll return 6 disk and try running 18 disks with the new model.

I had the old megaphone style Supertrapp. They also kept their word and replaced it for free with their new IDS model.
Excellent customer service there now.

I just talked to the rep again last week and he says that the wait is still 6 weeks. I may have to go back to my stock muffler and ecm just to ease my mind about getting pole vaulted. My first IDS broke but I caught it during regular inspection and they replaced it right away. I always check it before a ride now but can't shake the image of a high speed face plant and its making me slow down way too much. I think they should try and expedite this whole process since they(the mufflers) do break and the result can be fatal. Maybe if we put a little more pressure into getting a quicker response or something. Didn't Buell have to issue a recall right away over less actual failures? Don't they have the same responsiblity. I'll rig a safty wire for now but I still don't trust it. I'm not saying I don't like their customer service which is very good, I just think in the interest of avoiding litigation they should move quicker or someone could get killed or worse, spend the rest of their lives bedridden.

Cdstarr: I understand your anger but at least they're correcting their wrong! The reason for the 6 weeks shipping is because of the demand on replacements. If they weren't making things right, you'd be able to get one tomorrow. I'm content to wait the six weeks to have things set right.

Just my .02 worth.

Mennis,

I'm not saying there're not doing enough, but I found out about this by reading it here. I'm sure there are quite a few riders who are not getting the message because no one will contact them and they'll find out the hard way. I do believe however that most Buell riders are used to inspecting their bikes regularly so they should catch it but maybe not. I'm not sure how they could go about notifying people but I think they should get the word out somehow either through the dealers or in national bike publications. I'm sure they don't want to cause a panic but riders who are using this product need to know sooner than later. Otherwise I think they make a great product and I've used them for close to 20yrs now and will continue to in the future I just don't want to see anyone get hurt if they don't have to.

I installed a new Buell IDS(Supertrapp?) muffler on my '02 M2 that appears to be OVERbuilt to me.It sure seems a lot sturdier than the old megaphone disc muffs. Did I get the problem or the solution muffler? So far I like it. On my last M2 I went through 5 or 6 V&H mufflers in less than a year!My friend who rides as much as I do had the same luck with V&H.Maybe the new "Y" hanger on the front would have been the cure but I wasn't gonna go through all that hassle again to find out. This new muffler looks like they meant business when they made it.I hope it's as sturdy as it looks.

More news from the SuperTrapp front. I called to get the information on replacing my IDS pipe. They told me that they were only replacing "broken" mufflers. I asked why they weren't replacing a product that is known to be faulty.

Needless to say, I should be getting the new pipe in 4-6 weeks. They aren't even asking me to return the old pipe until the new one arrives!

Moral of the story...Don't let them talk you out of replacing the original design!!!!

I got my new IDS installed a couple of weeks ago thanks to Deanna at Modesto Buell and just in the nick of time as the replacement I had was already broken almost all the way through. The new model is most definitly built to take some abuse and should hold up well. The only flaw I could find while installing it was that the collector is shorter where it connects to the stock header. Its only covering about an inch of the header tube but it seems to be enough. I learned from a reliable source that you should make sure to loosen the nuts at the cylinder head when mounting the muffler to take the tension out or you could crack the header pipe itself. Or just end up breaking an exhaust stud which is just as bad. Still, overall I'm impressed with the quality of construction on the new pipe and time will tell how it holds up. Many thanks to Modesto Buell for helping expedite the entire process.

New replacement pipe arrived yesterday!!! It definitely looks more rugged. According to SuperTrapp, they had Buell/H-D test the new design on their in-house shake test (mainly because Buell sells the same pipe under the Buell name). I should be installing within the next few weeks (just in time to wait for warm weather).

PS- If you're calling SuperTrapp customer service, ,make sure to ask for Geri. She's the ONLY person there that would return my phone calls.

On the Supertrapp front;
I read this thread a while ago, and thought maybe I was lucky, as my pipe looked good with no signs of breakage..you can see where this is going right?
Found the muffler broken at the pipe inlet to the can, just like everybody has been describing, after a long ride to PA and back to upstate NY. So I called, talked to Gerri even, but I was told, and I never mentioned I read this on the net, to "not belive everything you read on the net" and that since my pipe is older that 1 yr., and out of warranty, Supertrapp is not doing anything about my problem. After further discussion, I was told to call back in 2 weeks to find out if they can perhaps prorate a new pipe or something, we will see.
They ceertianly are not doing any kind of blanket recall at this time.

Just came across this thread. I just bought a 95 S2 that has the Supertrapp on it. Should I be concerned? The pipe isn't showing any signs of wear/cracking. Any recommendations on another slip-on for the bike if I decide to replace it before it develops a problem? Any tell-tale signs I should be on the lookout for? Thanks.
