2006 Ulysses: 10,000 miles on bike, 2500 miles on oil. My "home brew" is 1qt Rotella 5w/40 and 1.5qt 15w/40, which I used for winter riding. Oil added was only 6oz in 2500 miles, but it was at the add mark when I changed the oil.
I will stick with the Rotella 15w/40, OEM filter, and 2500 mile change intervals. |

Just curious as to why you chose the 15w40/5w40 brew over running full 5w40 Rotella synthetic? |

Thanks for posting this. I've gotten some flak here suggesting that Rotella is a viable oil to run. I think you proved my point. I wonder if you'd get similar results running straight 5W40 Rotella syn? I've heard it said here before and I think it is true that "It's not what kind of oil you run, it's that you have enough of it." |

I was there with you Johnny. I've had great results on many vehicles with the Rotella Syn and really thought it was a good solution for the Uly. I've seen a couple of tests now and I think they have all been Az_rider's, but have been very positive. |

Well I think the proof is in the UOA. Rotella Syn is so cost effective, and gives the benefits of a full synth even if it is only a Group III. I use it in all my other bikes. Because it's a diesel oil it's got a good antiwear package, plenty o' detergents and buffers, and superior (to dino) resistance to thermal breakdown. I am going to run it in my XB next oil change. I am no longer wary after reading this thread. |

I feel kind of dumb. This UOA is for 15W40 Rotella Dino, with a little 5W40 syn thrown in for winter. I still think 5W40 would be OK. Maybe I'll run it for 3000 miles and do a UOA. I'll take one for the team. |
