ok - had a couple of guys ask me to document some of the things I had planned for my winter buildup. so here goes, new thread, starting right from my prototyping. part 1) first thing on the list to turn the CityX into an adventure-moto is a bigger screen. I happen to like the blue flyscreen, and want to keep it integrated into the revised body, but want extra dash space for GPS, some extra switches, etc. here's 2 photos of the 1st prototype. this is made from real thin gauge sheetmetal, but the final version will be either 1/8", or 3/16" aluminum. looking for possible suggestions on contouring, and /or how to keep airflow smooth. ( been wondering about cutting a downward arc into the metal section behind the OE flyscreen for better visibility etc (Message edited by ulendo on November 19, 2006) |

the sharp crease / bend at the bolt holes is due to the very thin, springy steel, and wont be present on the final version - I use it for prototyping as it returns to 'flat'for using as a template. should have photos of the tail prototype by tomorrow night. A CityX with wind protection. Interesting. You were thinking about a bash plate to protect the muffler too. Maybe part 2 of the winter build-up? |

All told its a pretty involved project. Guess I should have started with the whole list, and digressed from there. step 1 is to do front and rear cowls, plus a Uly front fender conversion ( which is already on the way) step 2 - the main project for this winter - is to convert to an undertail exhaust using the muffler from a CBR1000 RR, and fit proper underside armor. ( 1/4" vented aluminum ) step 3 - possibly do the DIY chain conversion, and play with both primary, with the final result to be a wider ratio setup, with ~stock highway rpm in top gear. step 4 - not till NEXT winter - is to build a 3 piece set of custom aluminum cases for the new tail. *** takes a bit of planning, as I want to integrate the mounts into the tail section, so it'll look decent with the bags on or off. Along the way, I'd like to mess with the airbox, plus fit ( and dyno tune) a race ecm for the new exhaust...priority on that will depend on if / how badly it behaves with the CBR pipe. Longer travel is also on the agenda, but is going to depend heavily on $$$, need, and availability. overall idea is to build it into an adventure bike that'll work for me: ground clearance, and overall ridability being paramount, without altering the saddle height too radically. (after meeting me, and riding with me, that combination should make sense to you at least, jerry ) |

Chris, When the time comes, you may want to consider Pelican plastic cases for your luggage, instead of aluminum. I suspect that the Pelican case is actually tougher than aluminum, and it will spring back into shape after it takes a hit. asdf - I've looked at the pelican cases a) they're just too darn expensive b) the square shape wont work very well for my concept even with a longer tail - I want to be able to carry a passenger with the cases on. c) I'm trying to work with the organic (buglike?!?!) look of the bike, rather than the KLR-with-a-milkcrate look I do aluminum fab work for a living, so while time consuming, building custom cases is a viable option for me. gives me the option of custom internal, and external bracketry, plus the possibility of built in water or possibly fuel tanks electraglider - its coming. |

Chris, I actually like the crease in the proto-type screen. I find the 'character lines' attractive and think they complement the overall design of the M/C. Also sets the design aside from the the stock look. I'm thinking I'd like one like that for my Uly. |

Heres mine in process, Still working on a bag and rear treatment. Probably going to use the Blast rear tail section, (already on order) and the Exhaust from the Triumph Speed Triple to get the exhuaust up under the seat and give me some more damn ground clearance. TT be damned

Wow Chris, You've got some interesting mods planned for your CityX this winter. I'd be courious to see them in person and get a look at how they work. You know that we are going to get together next summer so I can see how they work.(and sound!!) Keep in touch and one of us can make the trip and we'll meet up again. BTW, I seen Cityslicker's bike at sportbike NW last summer. That one looks good also. Them little Uly's are so cute (Message edited by debueller on November 21, 2006) |

cityxslicker - I'd be interested to hear how you're coming along with the blast tail section. I've been working with 0.125" 5056 aluminum and its driving me nuts trying to build the curves into the tail. have you got your's trial fit yet? |

I am in a holding pattern on the blast rear end. I have the lights, a fram fab up, and ordered the turn signals. But I am waiting on the TT demo. If I can pull of the height, that might be the bike to add to the garage.... |
