So there I was....... I just shut the ignition switch off on the Uly today when I got to work, and the gauges cycled, just like they do when you start the bike. I thought that was odd, so I turned the key on again, and noticed the clock was reset at 1:00. My trip meters also reset. When I went to start it to go home, it started fine, but I got home and it did the same thing. That can't be good! Any ideas??????? |

Check the wiring particularly around the steering head. Been issues with insulation being worn down and causing unusual behaviour. |

Yep...sounds like the wiring harness issue...same symptoms I had. |

Do you have the update routing piece there or the original one? |

Ummm... What update routing piece? |

I guess not many dealers are updating their customers/bikes? The plastic that routes the cables/wires around the left side of the steering neck is what causes this problem. Buell came out with and updated design last spring. Give me a minute to dig up the paperwork. |

I didn't know there was an updated routing piece, so obviously I have the original. Does the dealer have to put it in me? Does a wire in the wiring harness break, or does it just pull loose from somewhere? |

Just did some more checking. The gauges reset everytime I turn the key on. The front wheel stays in one place, so there is no pinching or pulling on the harness so the damage is done. I guess it's not kinda bad now, it's just bad. Turn the key on, reset the clock, turn the key off, turn the key on and it's 1:00 again. |

Sorry about the wait for the response; I had to do some digging. The updated part is for all Lightnings and Ulysses. The Lightnings have not had the problem for some reason that the Uly's have. The old part was C0047.1AD. The new part is Y1000.2AK MSRP $3.15 BadWeb $2.83. As much as I hate to turn down sales, you would save money by ordering it through your local dealer. If you still want to order through me, I sure appreciate the support! I suggest ordering it now if you haven't had the problem, before potential damage occurs. If you already have the problem, sorry the damage has occurred. Take it to your local dealer, let them know about the update. They will either repair or replace the harness. Blake, If you are reading this, it may be good info to post on the header of the Big, Bad, and Dirty and XBoard. |

What is this part so we know if we have it or not? |

It is the wiring harness guide on the left side of the steering neck. The old one is kind of shallow and points the wires downward when they exit. The shallowness of the channel can cause binding. The new version has a much wider channel and the wires exit facing the rear of the bike instead of downward. I will try to get a photo of both versions on Friday when I'm at the shop. |

I went and looked at mine and I can see the part number on it. I have the c...1ad part. My concern is that the wires need to point down a little more instead of rearward. If I face mine down a little more, I have no problems reaching steering lock on that side. If they exit facing more rearward, there will definitely be binding when I turn. Seems odd to me. |

Late spring early summer, my uly began doing the gauge reset thing. Since I am an employee with a Buell dealership I, and the tech who worked on my uly were able to have many conversations with buell during the diagnosis of the problem. The updated wire guide was already available by this point, so naturally the wiring was checked in this area, no worn insulation or crimping. After several days of failed diagnosing, Buell sent a new complete wiring harness and 9 hours of labor later the problem was cured. I have ten thousand miles on the bike now, still do not have the updated guide, and have had no crimping or wearing on the wiring. So I do not think that the gauge reset problem is associated with the wiring around the steering head, of course in some instances it may be, But in mine it was not and it sounds like with wannaberacerdude since it occurs with the front of the bike stationary the same may be true. So, in short get a new wiring harness. It will be covered under warranty |

Thanks for the replies. I think it's in the wiring harness too. My Aprilia was doing the same thing. Everything would work fine, you could set the clock and stuff, but as soon as you shut the key off, it dumped everything again. I traced that back to the main power feed wire to the gauges. What a pain. I'm taking it to the dealer Friday morn. |

WannaBeARacerDude, Keep us posted on how your trip to the dealer goes. Josh Cox, The pics would be nice to see if you can get them posted. Thanks in advance. I have an early model Ulysses and always wondered if the harness was messed up some way because when I turn hard left the harness is actually compressed by the left fork leg. I asked the dealer about this on the 1K service and they said that they are all that way and it is normal. I haven't seen any of the 07 models in person yet to compare..... |

The trip to the dealer went swell! Dropped it off Friday noon. My appointment was later in the afternoon and into Saturday. They called me Saturday around 3pm saying it was done. Picked it up Sunday morning. Yeah, that's right, Sunday morning. They said a wire in the steering neck area had pulled apart. They said the wire had like a shrink wrap joint that pulled apart.?. They ordered that new wire router for me. Obviously, I didn't get to talk to the dude that worked on it, but I will when that part comes in. The dealer is Kutter HD, Janesville Wisconsin. That's the second time they have slipped me in and got me back out. Very GOOD... |

If you want to know what it looks like when the wires pull apart inside the heat shrink tubing here is a picture. The brown wire is the right turn signal. My dash turn signal indicator quit working. You can see the red wires crimped and shrinked together in the picture. I would bet if your gauges reset intermittently that's where your problem would be. Yes I am fixing myself. To much distance and trouble to take to dealer. Seems like a lot of trouble just to fix the turn signal indicator but I will check the other wires while in there.

my dealer has had two stabs at this problem, and they seem to be merely poking at it and saying "I dunno..." I suppose there was a tech bulletin regarding this issue and the updated part? Is that reference available to the layman? It's looking more and more like I'm gonna switch dealers. |

TECH BULLETIN: RE WIRING HARNESS PINCH Symptoms: Random loss of electrical circuits, clock resets, turn signal failures. Cause: Wiring harness on left front fork and steering head being pinched due to insufficient clearance causing breaks inside cable and resultant short circuits or open circuits. FIX: Avoid tight left turns to the steering stop. Replace wiring guide.
