Sammie, So sorry to learn about Nick's accident. Since I can't make it to Daytona I hadn't been checking this thread; I just happened to see a post about his accident over on SACBorg. I'll swear, it seems like you have to have somebody with the patient 24 hours a day or the doctors will come in when you're not there every friggin' time! (I say this from experience with 2 elderly parents.) I truly think they sometimes wait until the "coast is clear" before they come to check on a patient so they can avoid talking to anyone. Hopefully you can find a friend or relative to help out pretty soon. Sorry to hear Nick's in pain. One good thing- if he's on morphine, he may be hurting now but he probably won't remember it (based on my limited experience). Hang in there; things WILL get better. | ||

the being in pain thing may also have something to do with how high his tolerance is. dont take that the wrong way please, i mean to the drugs. i go by my personal experiance with some major body damage. they have attempted many times to drug me up so that i can not tell i am hurt but it never works. i have had to literally stand in front of the doctor and take the pills they have given me because they dont belive i am taking them since i am still coherant, but yet they have no real affect on me. does that make any sence? guess what i mean is drugs dont effect some people the way they are supposed to. we all wish Nick a speedy recovery, and you a well healed husband. u both are in our prayers. | ||

Also, on the question of no water; under heavy trauma, bruising, and swelling, the docs like to keep the patient dehydrated to limit the swelling. His organs were affected and some of the organs are in their own sac. e.g. the kidneys. Heavy swelling can cause problems to these organs including blood flow problems. This is an explanation I got regarding my sisters accident involving ATV vs. Land Cruiser at 60 mph... Just my guess as to why no water... You're a true best friend to Nick Sammy. Having spent the past 11+ months dealing with trauma centers I know what you're going through when it comes to getting some absolute facts. Seems like every facility has its own protocol for speaking with family members and I'd be willing to bet that Henrik has already given you some excellent advice. Alrighty...Update on Nick This is it... I have to ask for help now... I've already spoken with Apex and FTD, they are going to help. Since they are so close, I called them first. What I need is visitors for Nick.. be it physical or on the phone. I had to leave the hospital this afternoon, I stayed the night and woke up this morning with the start of a head cold. Ugh! Of course... no doubt it would happen now! All I can do is shake my head and grin stupidly. ~L~ Anywho...if anyone else is near enough for a physical visit and would like to, please drop me a line or a post here would be great. I wasn't gone 2 hours today when Nick called me and said he'd been calling for pain meds for an hour, 3 rings of the button, before he got them. So.. of course I'm all irked and bent out of shape. He says to me, "they don't take care of me when you are gone". Alrighty, now I feel like a real creep for leaving but I don't dare stay around him with a cold. It's not like he'd get just a head cold. Okay, so I tell him I am making phone calls for people to cover some time that I can't be there and that I will call the nurse's desk in a bit. He calls me back in absolute agony, this big teddybear of a man is crying. I finally get it out of him that he is having bladder spasms and his ribs are killing him. Bladder spasms? I say, and he's already moaning as if dying again. I tell him to hit the call button, he said he did... no one came, finally someone called through the stupid intercom to ask what he needed. He asked they please send his nurse, Cindy. Nothing happens, he doesn't want me to hang up(to call the nurses)... he's frightened. I say to hit the button again... he's crying out..I can't even describe the way he sounded, he's frozen up, can't move his arm to press the button again.. when the spasm subsides some I have him call AGAIN. Finally his nurse comes in and asks what he needs. He is telling her about the spasms and she's blowing him off, as if he doesn't know what he's talking about.(She was concerned earlier that later he could become addicted to the drugs and argued with me when I said he'd be ok) As I'm telling him to put her on the phone, another spasm hits him and she gets to witness it. Guess what... she finally figures out that he's not producing through the freakin' catheter. Upon some nosing around, she discovers that his tube is totally blocked and has to back wash it. Yeah... so he fills the catheter box, (I can' recall what it's called. Henrik?) several times in a row. some 1,500 units or whatever term they use, and is still going! Blood had blocked it... ohhh sometime wayyy earlier. It was probably blocked when I left around 2, but it was dumped about an hour before that, so it looked fine to me with a bit of urine in it. He went all day that way! No one even checked when taking vitals and such. So, I have to wonder, what if... they hadn't gotten to it when they finally did?! Henrik, would his bladder have ruptured? What would or could have happened? My apologies if this topic makes any one uncomfortable, but I just had to tell. I really don't want to go there and take that chance of making him sick, but at the same time, I'm actually afraid to leave him in their care when I have to come home. I was thinking, even if you can't visit in person, a phone call would be good contact and make him feel less alone. I've already had one person make it sound like Nick just wants all of my attention, as if he were spoiled having me around all the time and acting that way because he's having a little fit and wanting all of my attention. Bad place to go with me. I kinda wanted to suggest they go get hit by a car and tell me about it afterwards! I keep going away from what I actually want to say. This is just unbelievable! I haven't even finished writing this and there's more trouble!! I don't know why I am not crying...I sure feel like it! The new nurse on duty is a nurse he had before.. his first night, great to him, well... he's making him wait for morphine. His pain meds were late anyways, then she gave him the pills first, which we all know take longer to work, and said he had to wait 20 minutes for the morphine. Then she told him that his (big)pillow was supposed to be under his shoulder blade and put it there. Um can we all say dingbat?!! Shoulder broken. Shouldn't that be in his file somewhere??!! Ggrrrr.... He's also slid into a bad position on the bed. I guess she left so soon he figured he'd have to wait till she brought the morphine back. So I made him hang up and I called the head nurse and gave her the what for. It still took Grace over 5 minutes to get back to him. What am I going to do? I really need to know how I am going to do this. At this rate he'll stop recovering so well! I actually had good news to tell you guys about his progress. I have to call him back, so I'm going to close this for now. I don't know how long I'll be on the phone this time and don't want to time out. Is this a better rant?! Yep... Sammie & Nick, My prayers go out to you both. Hang in there Sammie. I have spent a couple weeks in a hospital with one of my best friends after he met a Ford Explorer head-on. Your help is on the way, though not as quick as we would like. I'll be flying into Orlando on Wed. March 1st. I have obligations on Thurs. at DIS, but after that I'll be free in the evening to make a visit. Please post the details on how we find/call Nick. I'm staying for 12 days in Daytona, so I'll be sure to visit as often as possible. As my friend was a perfect example, the more stimulus we can give Nick, knowing people who care about him want him to heal up quickly, the faster He'll do so!! If I have to, I'll read him articles from magazines over the phone...I've got free minutes on my phone, so I don't see any other good reason to use them. Okay, I think my head is through spinning around and I seem to be out of split pea soup... My friend and I arranged a different phone to be put in Nick's room and he can actually work it, answer it and even dial out by himself. I found a glass that fits his hand perfect so now he can at least drink on his own. He's getting good at crawling his other hand up and down where ever he wants it to rest. He uses his fingers and inches them across himself or the pillow. He got to have solid food yesterday and did fairly well eating. I have to cut up his food and give him the bites, but hey..food...that's progress, too! He can also touch his own face and even wipe it with a cool cloth. He still can't get up to his forehead, that makes him use his shoulder and he's no where close to using either of them. They've changed his meds and upped the dose. He's now taking Percocet and Morphine for break through pain, which turns out to be about every two hours or less. As long as he hasn't just had a dose of Morphine, he is pretty much coherent most of the time. He still falls asleep for a few minutes while talking, but he comes back around. It would be wonderful if some of you could maybe organize times to call him. This is his direct line. 321-841-0849 If for some reason that doesn't get him, you can call the nurse's station and have them transfer the call to him. The nurse's desk # 321-841-5184. Info: Nick Moody, room 819. If they should ask, they shouldn't but just in case, you are a relative... you guys can be brothers, cousins or brother-in-laws. Ladies, sister, sister-in-law, cousin. They really shouldn''t ask and there shouldn't be any problem getting through on his direct line, however, if you have trouble reaching him, please let me know as soon as possible. I'll get it straightened out. Keep in mind, if you dial his direct line and get no answer after about 5 or 6 rings, he's probably asleep. So try back later. It would make him feel so good to have you all calling him! I just don't want him to feel alone. Here is my info again: Sammie my cell, 386-216-72033. Nick's cell, which I have with me all the time, 702-300-3248. House phone, 386-574-9694. I forgot to tell a couple other things... sorry for blabbing all over your board like this... Nick will not be home at BikeWeek. He should be released from the hospital early this coming week, but from there he goes into a special care facility. It's like a nursing home, where they can help him get on his feet. Rehab won't take him until he can stand and that won't be soon. The docs want him to start with some touch weight on his right leg,and turn to sit in a chair however, he won't be able to do any touch weight on his left leg for approximately 6 weeks. So that kinda throws a ...ummm...crowbar? into the mix. That'll have to be figured out at the special care facility. I am trying to get him in one near home, so visiting will be easier all the way around. We'll have to see how things come along, who knows, we may be able to arrange to take him outside or in a big private room to visit while you all are here. He is excited about you all coming! I told him I was still opening the house and is thrilled. Okay, this time I am off to bed. Thanks again! I could just hug you all! Sammie | ||

Hey Sammie, The fact is every( and I do mean every) Hospital is short staffed and they will tell you it's because they can't find good people but mostly its about not wanting to pay more people. Those Nurses are probably covering 3-4 more people than they should be if not more. Then the lame excuse that he may become addicted if they give him to much. If he is in pain he cannot become addicted...addictions come from taking meds to send yourself into a altered state, not to survive what is probably severe pain. They have rules on how often they can give meds and most of the time those times are spread well beyond the actual times the meds are effective. And most of the time it is far more work than the nurses want to do, to get those times adjusted. You need to tell them you want the M.D. called and if they don't, call patient services...With out Patients not even the biggest hospital can work. As soon as they get in on the problem things will happen believe that from someone in the medical field and father to severely ill children. Be nice to the nurses and they will be nice to you...to a point, but make sure they understand, in no uncertain terms that you are there for Nick...and without you there fighting for him, who will? As for the foley cath problem...I would probably have flipped out over that. There is no excuse for someone to not have noticed a Trauma victims bag not filling, pretty quickly. He was probably blocked well before you left if he filled it 3 times and is having bladder spasms. His bladder could definitely have ruptured, although hopefully before then someone would actually have done their job and noticed the problem. Sammie, I know these things can wear you down, but believe me every hospital has some of the same problems and most people like Nick don't have someone like you helping them. And then someone actually told you that he is being spoiled by all of your attention? Some people are just insane. Fact is right now he has no control of anything not even when he takes a leak he needs someone to do everything for him. Don't worry about what anyone else say's do what makes you feel right and the others can "take a long walk off a short pier". I hope you are resting and as for the cold try to stay well so you will be there for Nick but also don't worry that you and your cold will make him worse, the hospitals are so notorious for stuff floating around in them that your cold is not even a slight worry for any patient there. Sammie, do not apologize for rambling, babbling or anything else. We are attentively listening because we want to know the latest and care. Also, when my mom was in the hospital because of a low heart rate and they were going to put in a pace maker, they initially hooked her up to a temporary external unit while waiting for surgery. The nice nurses check on mom and left. Mom was talking to us when all of a sudden crash, she was passing out with her eyes rolling back in her head. My brothers not knowing what to do and I trained as an EMT (though I never certified) and a first responder, told them to get help and jump up on the gurney to check for vitals. Just as soon as I did, mom opened her eyes and was fine. The nurses came rushing in but everything seemed fine. They first thought we over reacted but I knew what I saw. Just as they started to leave, mom again crashed in full view of the nurses. They did the code blue thing and in about a minute twenty people were all in the room. Doctors and specilists all there to see my mom come out of it just as fast as she passed out. They were all stump when for the third time she crashed again. By this time I was in the room still, I would not leave, and observing from the back. I observed that each time my mom passed out the external pace maker lights would blink. Here I was sitting in a room full of MD, PhD, RNs and none of them noticed the machine turning off and on. With enough years in education combined to match a long and healthy life span, I had to ask them if the batteries in the machine needed to be replaced. Looking like a bunch of prairie dogs, all their heads popped up for a second, they looked over at the machine and then started scrambling for a new machine. Long story Sammie, but the point of the story is that just because they spent allot of years in school, doesn't make them any less human. Sammie, this is incredible. Even though this same thing may occur at any hospital I might suggest moving him to another, even if you have to go as far as Jax or Orlando. BTW, right after going to patient affairs I would call a lawyer, maybe they would talk to him. I can't believe that anyone would be so insensitive to suggest that you are spoiling Nick!!  I just wish I was closer so we could give you a helping hand. As I mentioned we will be down early on March 2nd and will get with you on the way to see what we can do. Zxzer hit it  My sister is a nurse at our YRMC and I'm an EMT. The nursing shortage is appalling. My sister works herself to death to make sure all her patients are taken care of but the fact remains, she shouldn't have to. They're spread too thin. I just want to echo what was said that the nurses aren't just ignoring him (there are a few bad nurses mind you) and you are his best advocate. Don't feel bad about being there for him, and don't ever feel bad about venting here. It's during times like this that you need people to lean on, even strangers... I'm so far away, and have never met Nick but for this board, but I'll call him today during the race to see if he's caught any of it... Does he even like Nascar??? I don't LOL! I think things will get much better when he's moved to the special care facility. The nurse to patient ratios are usually better there, or there are at least more aides...and the number of patients needing acute care will be less. I think the move there will be good for him. | ||

Good morning, I'll try to answer some of the questions you have asked first, then I'll give Nick's update on his night. Charlieboy6649, it would be wonderful if you could give him a call today. No, Nick doesn't really care for Nascar either. He likes the bike races. Like I had to tell you that. ~L~ Midwayav8r, Nick is in the best hospital in Orlando now. Scary isn't it? I'm not feeling bad about taking care of Nick. The remark just peeved me and I had to get it off my chest before I did something I would regret later. M2nc, I understand that the nurses and doctors are only human, but the amount of screw ups with Nick is way beyond that. Gosh, that's so frightening, what happened to your mother and over the simplest thing! This is how I would see it, they should have checked out the machine before hay hooked her up to it. I have very little patience for this kind of neglect and carelessness. I do so appreciate all of the support you've given me. I wish there were words to say just how much it means to me. Nothing seems to say it adequately. Here is a run down on what happened last night after I last posted here. Nick's nurses were rough with him when they went in to reposition him the correct way. (after I called and bitched) Nick had bad reflux, they had given him meds for it before, but he hadn't had another episode so he was taken off of them, his nurse wouldn't give him anything for it. She said it wasn't on his orders and obviously did nothing to find out if he could have it. So he got nothing for the reflux until the new shift started and he got the nurse he had yesterday(Cindy). He likes her a lot. Nick spilled his water into his lap around 6AM, asked to be dried and was left like that until 9AM when Cindy came in. One of his nurses wouldn't wipe him off with a cool cloth. They left him sweating and itching. Here's the kicker... When his nurse finally brought him his Morphine, she gave it to him undiluted!! It was knocking him out the very moment it was given. Then somewhere between 3 and 4AM his IV blew and no one noticed that the morphine was running back out. He didn't have any Morphine from that time until the new shift when Cindy came in and found it blown. She gave it to him so that it didn't run back out and had a new IV put in. I spoke with Cindy this morning and she said that Nick can't spend any more nights alone. Someone has to be there with him. He is becoming paranoid, not that he doesn't have a reason to be. He begged me this morning not to leave him alone at night with those nurses. He's seriously worried that they will end up killing him. At this point, I'm not so sure I don't believe that, too! I took notes and will of course speak with the patient services person. That's the woman that helped me find Nick the day of his surgery. She did make heads roll. The nurse that had given me such a rash of.... came in and apologized repeatedly to me for not helping me find him and her attitude. His docs HAD to come to Nick's room and talk to me after all of my complaints. One was soo mad he could hardly talk. Oh well, too bad, so sad... he of course tried to tell me that I could have simply talked to one of his interns, they're a team. I actually looked him in the eye and said "I don't want to talk to an intern, I want to talk to you, the doc that did the surgeries". He left all huffy after a brief explanation of what was done and why the other wasn't done. They didn't operate on Nick's shoulder because they were worried that surgery would leave him worse off then letting it heal on it's own. Nerve damage was the concern. The doc said he'll have arthritis and it will probably always ache, but it would be better than any more nerves damaged. He came back in about 15 minutes later with copies of Nick's x-rays. He showed me the breaks and then what his legs look like after surgery. He has 2 big pins (I'd call them rods, myself) in this right leg, femur/hip. The one goes all the way down to just above the knee. The left leg, under the knee, has at least 7 pins in it. There could have been more, it wasn't a full picture. I did write to Henrik and ask my questions, just so you all know. Thank you again, Henrik. Court or Blake, please give me a call so we can figure everything out for bikeweek. Thanks. Sammie, Please let me know the location and visiting hours for the Special Care facility. I will not be able to make it to Bike Week but I have to be in Jacksonville the following week for a business meeting. Depending on the visiting hours, I should be able to break away for a visit. My 2 cents: Just remember that you need to take care of yourself as well. You're no good to Nick if you exhaust your coping resources. Think hard about staying at the hospital. Your time at home and the opportunity to vent and escape here are probably doing more good than you know. Steve | ||

I just spoke to Nick and I think, in all candor, he was impressed with my medical knowledge. I suggested the nurse, to clear a clogged foley, simply blow in it. Seemed like a simple solution. When I spoke to him Bueller Frank Davis (our in-house CSI guy) was there and everyone was sounding pretty upbeat. I'm getting so keyed up about Daytona it's awesome......anyone else feeling as sorry for Honda as I am? NOT Anyway. . . to those of you who have been helping light the fires under the Harley-Davidson dealers. . . first shipment is headed out today!  P.S. - Do NOT attack package with knife . . Sammie, Today at church we prayed for Nick, and I ran into the local chapter (Savannah) President of the "Bikers For Christ". I hope you don't mind, but I asked him to contact the chapter in Orlando and see if there was anything they could help with. I gave them my email and will get them in touch with you. It may be tomorrow! I was so glad to hear that someone has called and gone by. My wife suggested that you call the local news media with this story!!!! Might raise some eyebrows. I'm really looking forward to coming to Daytona, meeting and seeing you and Nick, and watching Buell win the race. | ||

Sammie & Badwebbers, I just got off the phone with Nick and he seemed to be in good spirits -- considering the situation he's in very good spirits. Suffering the same mental anguish any of us would be in such a position. I feel so bad for Sammie & Nick and oh how I wish I could help. He did mention something that I'm willing to bet we have some expertise on and that's insurance -- I hate the friggin insurance companies (sorry Newfie.) There has to be a resident expert on the subject to help Sammie navigate through the process. I know in my own personal case with my parents I gave up and had to hire a lawyer to push all the insurance issues. I honestly believe that they deny, deny, deny, and then delay, delay, delay in a attempt to frustrate you into submission. I'm asking for one insurance expert to step up and ping Sammie,,,,please. Sammie, Nick promised that me and Little Greg could stop by and shake his hand while we're in the area and we'd be honored to do so. Keep the faith and keep us in the loop. G2 | ||

Update I stopped by to see Nick this morning at 11:45. Just after I arrived another BWB member Mike (Apex_assasian) also showed up. Nick was upbeat and in good spirits. The two nurses who came in did a good job and were attentive/friendly. Court called while we were there and I spoke to him a little too. I took a Hot Bike mag. in for Nick and just bought a sport bike mag. while food shopping so he'll get that on my next visit. Nick wants everyone to know that he appreciates the visits, calls, emails, etc. That is it for now. Frank | ||

Thank you so much for visiting and calling Nick. It's cheered him a lot! I spoke with his nurse, "the pusher" ~L~ and she said your visit did him a world of good and he's still doing well as the day goes by. I hate to say this... and Nick feels very bad, but don't take him any more bike mags right now. He said he was trying to look at the one Frank left and felt so sick to his stomach he had to look away. I think we can all understand this reaction, especially at this point in his healing. You can certainly take other reading material in. He always enjoy the Victoria Secret magazine! ~LOL~ Seriously, he's into old radios (tube radios) He reads about anything. I wouldn't take him religious or political materials, but about anything else would be great. He likes reading about wild animals, what's been dug up in Egypt, you know, that kind of stuff. As far as the insurance issue goes, Florida is a "no fault" state. It really makes no sense to me, but I'm doing what I need to do as far as the car insurance and hospital go. I still have to find a lawyer to take Nick's case against the woman with the cell. Insurance is not going to pay for everything and I think considering the stupid reason she wrecked Nick, I want her to pay for it. I'm usually not this hateful, but that's all I have for her. As for the amount of time I spend at the hospital, I don't have much choice now. When I spoke to Nick's nurse this morning (Cindy the pusher, we like her) she said that Nick can't be left alone during the night any more. That I need to be there all night and watch out for him. So I will head that way shortly. I probably won't be back home until Tuesday. I have to meet with the social worker Monday, don't know what time, to find the next facility for Nick. I do so appreciate everything you guys have done! It's good just to say what's on my mind. I'm used to sharing everything that goes on in my little world with Nick and now I have to protect him from most of it. I will certainly post all his info on the new facility when I have it. Remember, the house is still open for everyone to crash, gather and BarB-Q. None of you will get in my way, I know that was a worry... don't worry, you'll be a help to me! This way I can do some of the things I need to do away from the facility and he won't be left alone if you're here to visit with him. Ohh he asked to pass this along...it isn't that he doesn't want to talk to any of you on the phone, he just realizes when he is too sleepy to do so or if he's not feeling well. Don't take it personally, call him back later. Thanks. Ok, I know there was something else... but I can't think of it... I have to go pack. Ohhh... thanks again Apex, for puppysitting for me! Nick says he will want his pup back when he gets home though..~LOL~ you all take care...thanks again for your well wishes and prayers. Sammie, I am want to give you and Nick a call tomorrow around lunchtime if possible. We'll be down on the 9th and I can't wait to meet you, Nick, and the rest of the Buellers. Sammie, Just a couple of quick thoughts from my own experience. I experienced a blocked catheter after an operation (I was back at home) and the pain was indescribable as was the relief when it was subsequently unblocked in the emergency ward. After a week in the hospital with an improperly diagnosed kidney stone, I became physically addicted to demerol. I had withdrawal symptoms for a short period and lasting symptoms for months afterward. My wife, God bless her, was still dealing with insurance issues involving my surgery for literally years afterward. You both remain in our thoughts and prayers. We are planning to visit Nick on the Friday before the race. |
