Josh, in a word: AWESOME! two things, tho: can we drink and party on the base (responsibly, of course), and can i get photos of the jets? i'm going to PM you my cell phone #, we REALLY need to talk. i'll be out of the loop here in a bit for the rest of today, and part of tomorrow, riding up to Gordon Buhle's memorial in Los Gatos. but call me anyway. if i don't answer, leave a voice mail with your number and i will call you back asap. Josh and Don, the idea of you two getting together on the ground in Vegas and actually scoping out a viable lodging/party option with your own eyes is GREAT, and i encourage both of you to do so, in case the base idea doesn't pan out. Mike, yes, PLEASE get your friend involved! this is what i've been looking for all along, someone on the "inside," not necessarity to get us a "deal" (altho that'd be nice!), but someone who knows the lay of the land and who can put together a lodging option that makes sense for a group of riders who wants to celebrate life by livin' large for a night in Las Vegas. we'll have at least six people, maybe as many as ten. if we share a suite (even an "expensive" one), the cost won't be prohibitive. it'd be nice, but not mandatory, to have a second or third floor suite actually overlooking the Strip, with a balcony or patio, so we can retire to the room at some point and continue the party. safety and security for the bikes is a MUST! all of you: PLEASE run with what you can right now, and by the end of the weekend we should be able to FINALLY ink the Las Vegas leg of this trip. Josh, again, i REALLY like the idea of the base, but not if i have to put my cameras away for the night. i've promised an epic adventure saga for BADWEB when i get done with this ride, and that includes the best photography i can produce. will PM my phone number, let's talk. i'm on the computer for another couple of hours, then away for about the next 24. take care, my friends. this little shindig ignites in just 16 days, and i am SO stoked. Bummer, Killen trail is closed due to sinkholes through the road. But Ebear and I think we have another plan. If it checks out OK, the street bikes will have to go the long way, and the Ulys and brave street riders will take a shortcut up a dirt road...not sure yet, it may be too steep, we'll know more soon. The last two lines of Ebears directions can be disregarded, more to come soon. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.581572,-117.330015&spn=0.010815,0.018797&z=1&t=h&hl=en Al (Message edited by al_lighton on August 20, 2005) |

If your still looking for something good to eat in Vegas and you want to dine at one of the Hotels, I recommend the Grand Lux Cafe at the Venetian. The food was very good the last time I was was there. They have a big variety of items and the prices were not that bad. I'm sure someone who lives there would know more places but it's a suggestion. http://www.venetian.com/dining/dining.cfm?ID=9 BTW... Jerry, thanks so much for your help with my group ride planning! We had an awesome time and it couldn't have been any better. |

Approx Total Time 5 Hrs There are several points of interest along the way to the Rock Store: Vincent Thomas Bridge on Hwy 47 (Ocean Blvd), Portugese Bend on PV Drive South where the land constantly shifts resulting in such frequent road repairs that there is a sharp transition to "solid ground" resembling a launching ramp -- a good photo op to get airborne, the canals at Venice, Venice Beach itself and a scenic overlook at Saddle Peak & Schueren Rds. I'm not pressing this but if we have time for something completely different: a "Dead Engine" race down Tuna Canyon which is a steep, twisty one-way downhill, and then pick up the route on PCH & Las Flores Cyn to Piuma Rd. Fun! Fun! Fun! Sparky |

Jerry, I called Joe today to see what he could do for yal. He confirmed no balconies due to too many jumpers. I guess it makes a city look bad, having high suicide rates and all. Anyway we'll see what he can find ... -Mike He's a photographer by the way. |

Various followups... Ferris: Sorry for the delay. On about 08/04/05 you asked travel time from Grand Junction to Vegas. Conservatively figuring you'll average 50mph actual, expect it will be 10 hours in the saddle. You can bump up the average to about 60mph pretty easily and subtract an hour+ of saddle time. Lots of sections will tickle triple digits. For figurin's sake, I generally average 67.2 through similar terrain. You will need to add time for any/all stops. >> Killen trail is closed due to sinkholes << Been over this one catching air on the Superhawk a couple times since it was paved a few years ago, woulda been fun to read your impressions. >> along the way to the Rock Store: Vincent Thomas Bridge on Hwy 47 (Ocean Blvd), Portugese Bend on PV Drive South << Along PV Drive you'll go by Green Hills Cemetery. Please think a couple good thoughts and give a nod to Joe Boyd's grave on the hill. >> something completely different: a "Dead Engine" race down Tuna Canyon << We do this on Stunt Rd. too. I'm hoping to get a time window for Vegas. Already have a place to stay lined up. Mostly need to arrange horse babysitting. Also watching the California details and probably can be along somewhat, just not sure exactly when/where. -Russ |

Jerry, A group of us from KC would like to meet up with you and any of the Iowa crew. We would like to rendezvous at US-136 and MO-149 where MO-149 turns south off of US-136. I got this from Jeff (Thunder) 10:06 AM 166.7 Turn RIGHT (West) onto US-136 [SR-149] 2.3 mi } 10:09 AM 169.0 Turn LEFT (South) onto SR-149 2.8 mi Is this a good time table estimate? If so we could be at that intersection before 10:00 to rendezvous (Message edited by gowindward on August 21, 2005) (Message edited by gowindward on August 21, 2005) |

"I'm not pressing this but if we have time for something completely different: a "Dead Engine" race down Tuna Canyon which is a steep, twisty one-way downhill" Tuna Canyon is now a one way road! It is also the location of my getting very lucky in that I went off a cliff one night with a buddy on the back. Best thing about the crash? It killed my Suzuki Kan-a-tuna.... Oh and broke my hand. |

Did you know there is a gaming convention in Vegas the weekend of the 9th? I've been advised that rooms will be very expensive on the strip. Joe said as much as $350 for regular rooms. No reservations made anywhere then? Yikes! I'll try and call you in the morning Jerry to see if we can figure something out. As for pics, he does weddings and stuff but is flexible and smart so if you need some shots he can probably help. -Mike |

Along PV Drive you'll go by Green Hills Cemetery. Please think a couple good thoughts and give a nod to Joe Boyd's grave on the hill. Russ, thanks for the heads up. i never met Mr. Boyd (i missed him by one year at my first Porterville Rally) but the words i hear when he is mentioned in a conversation of riders are the same words i've been hearing (and saying) about Gordon Buhle the past last two weeks. Joe, by every account, was a very good man. i think a stop at his gravesite, so we can pay our respects, is in order. Is this a good time table estimate? If so we could be at that intersection before 10:00 to rendezvous. Loren, i'll have to study up on that leg a bit (i've never ridden any of the roads we'll be riding that day), but i'm very sure we can work out a rendezvous. Staintune'd... Best thing about the crash? It killed my Suzuki Kan-a-tuna.... my buddy Dino's Katana helped a group of us get out of a nasty ticket several years back (a fact which he is quick to remind me of given the slightest opportunity). it's a weird, but true, story, one i'll share over the Buelling man conflagration... Mike, hadn't heard about the gaming convention. yikes. still waiting to hear from Josh as to whether we can party on the base. if so, it'd solve a lot of problems. will be chatting with M1 Don this morning, too - he rode to Veags over the weekend to check things out first-hand. will post more when i know more. 13 days 'til lift-off... |

>> Did you know there is a gaming convention in Vegas the weekend of the 9th? <snip> I'll try and call you in the morning Jerry << Rooms the night of (Thursday) Sept 8th might be less of an issue and may be regular rates, Vegas has conventions almost every weekend these days. IIRC however, they started asking for two nights minimum at the majors on the Strip a few years ago, you might run into that detail. >> i think a stop at his gravesite, so we can pay our respects, is in order. Is this a good time table estimate? If so we could be at that intersection before 10:00 to rendezvous. << While stopping at Joe's grave would be fantastic I am not sure about your timetable. Leaving Ocotillo Wells at 6am has you getting to the Lookout on Ortega about 9am, maybe a little earlier but pretty hard to predict when you'll be on PV. I think I'll plan to meet youse at the Lookout. Decision to stop at Joe's grave can be made later on the fly. What do you think of calling this leg on LABiker? Too busy?? The more the merrier?? -Russ |

FB, Sorry was off the net this weekend... stumbled around base not feeling too much... did I say I love alcohol?? I will call you in the morning Ferris. Right now the base is packed, I can't even get a room for my wife this week, but it should clear up by time of the ride. Right now I am here till the 10th and I can reserve the rooms on the 5th. I can get a photo pass so you can get "Conservative" pictures of the aircraft, but around base it shouldn't be a big deal. As far as drinking and partying it has happened nightly since I have been here so it shouldn't be a big deal. I will have to check on sponsoring you guys onto base and how regulations will affect you guys; I know for base employee's we have to have an MSF course completed and an M class liscense. For the regular riders Drivers Liscense, Registartion and proof of Insurance at least; not sure what you'll have for the Ully as far a reg, plates, insurance but we can work on that. There are gear requirements: Helmet; Full finger gloves; long sleeves and pants (Base is a no Squid zone)and your jacket or shirt must be "bright contrasting colors" so no BDU tops or black jackets, If you are wearing your leathers you can put a high visibility vest over it to meet the requirement; and finally sturdy shoes or boots, no sandles please, remember Base is a no Squid zone. Again Ferris I'll call around 3am; and will post through out the night this week. Josh |
