Good Morning Buellers! I returning to this forum after a two year vacation, and a new to me 04XB12R. It is a basket case that runs great, but has some electrical gremlins. I have poured through the wealth of information on this forum. Thank you for everyone who has shared to make this a Fantastic place to learn and engage. This is my 2nd Buell which I bought it as a project and have it running VERY strong. Mods I am aware of: Xenon bulbs Fender Delete- turn signals integrated into the brake/tail light bulb assembly Jaradine Can K&N Air Filter New Tune based on the Can from BuellTooth What I have done: New tune TPS reset Replaced plugs Checked Spark Plug Wires Cleaned tested and checked VR harness- 1/2 not functioning Tested Stator- strong output - no shorts to ground Cleaned, checked and sealed all of my grounds. Ran an extra ground from the front triple clamp to the back battery ground. Cleaned and grounded the frame to engine strap/ground back to battery ground. The bike runs fantastic so the shorted lights concern may be somewhere else. The cluster is cracked on top. The cluster did not function when I bought it. After I cleaned the triple clamp ground, it ran the diagnostic one time, then quit (no lights, no cycling, no tach or speedo). Brake lights work. Xenon headlights mod works although one pack had failed- new ballast on order (ES-0511). I have the manual - and am able to read schematics although I am not an engineer. Symptoms: Turn Signals on both sides front and back show continuity to ground- I am testing from both front and rear harnesses Gauges do not function - as described above Voltage Regulator is dead on one side- Questions- Any suggestions where I can look for the short in the lighting circuit prior to me pulling the harness completely out for a total inspection? Can someone provide ma an autozone or carquest part number for a voltage regulator? I saw in a post at one time, but am not able to re-locate it. Thanks in advance for any support! |

Turn signals black wires are constantly connected to the ground. Did you test positive turn signal wires? When you tested turn signals did you disconnect ALL turn signals plugs front and back? If not it will show you continuity to the ground on any wire positive and negative because of light bulb connects both wires. You can go to twinmotorcycles.com and find part number for you VR for your motorcycle and then google it using part number and buy new unit on eBay or in some Harley dealers online. Autozone does not care VR for Buells. Find Buell xb electric manual, it might have some information there how to troubleshoot instrument cluster. Another way is to check all cluster wires continuity using wiring diagram from service manual. If all wires are OK the problem might be inside the instrument cluster. Check all fuses and replace all relays also, or at least switch relays between each other. The problem might be there. (Message edited by Tpehak on June 21, 2019) |

Thank you for your response! Greatly appreciated. Yes- I tested the purple and brown as they head to the switches. Also, unplugged the rear harness so no lights were connected to ground. I thought the same thing. I have a buell xb electrical diagram so I have been working with that. I will replace the relays as you suggest. That may be the problem- should not be too expensive. Where is the best place to locate relays for this bike? Thank you for the twinmotorcycles.com idea. I'll update when I make some headway. Let me know if any other thoughts surface. }}} |

No, you have to disconnect both rear and front turn signals if you want to check if turn signals positive wires are shortened to the ground. They are connected in parallel so if you disconnect only rear turn signal the electricity will still flow through the front turn signal. Disconnect front and rear and check. You can buy motorcycle relays on Amazon. To check relays you don't actually need to buy new relays, just remove the relays and stick them in different slots, if you see after this that something works different or does not work - this is likely bad relay, if everything works the same, the relays are likely OK. See wiring diagram and find which relay feeds the instrument cluster. Maybe this relay is bad. Also find on wiring diagram how power source goes to the instrument cluster and thru which fuse. Maybe this fuse is bad or maybe the instrument cluster power source wire is broken somewhere or shortened on the ground. Also find ground wire of the instrument cluster and check that this wire has continuity with motorcycle ground. Check cluster ground wire continuity from cluster plug to motorcycle ground. Check cluster power source wire continuity from cluster plug and to the fuse box spot where it goes (find on diagram). If you found the problem with wire, start it narrowing down until you found the scuffed wire isolation or where the wire is broken. (Message edited by Tpehak on June 21, 2019) |

Tpehak, Thanks for the direction. I will switch the relays around. I had disconnected all light fixtures, I was checking positive only and still found ground on both sides. I found out how much voltage should be at the cluster both constant and keyed_ also which fuse carries the backup feed when key is off. Next time I get an hour or so, I plan on digging back in. I will post an update when I make some headway. Thanks a ton!!!!! |

So you fount turn signals are shortened and the fuse in turn signal circuit does not cut the circuit? |

Disconnect the battery and cluster socket for the next three tests. Test the cluster power wire continuity from battery positive terminal to cluster socket pin 2. Test the cluster ground wire continuity from cluster socket pin 13 to the ground. Turn the ignition key switch in position ON and test the cluster ignition wire continuity from cluster socket pin 12 to battery positive terminal. Double check the pin numbers I posted using wiring diagram. I took the pin numbers from 2009 Buell XB wiring diagram. Report results back. (Message edited by Tpehak on June 30, 2019) |
