Hi BWB. I just bought my first Buell, an '08 XB9SX a few months ago. Its a mostly stock bike but there is a mod on it whose function I am not entirely sure of. The previous owner didn't know the function of it either. It seems to just spray some dirty fluid on the swing arm. Any and all help is appreciated.

Yea that is probably a rerouted breather catch can. Normally that fluid gets sucked into the motor, some people reroute the crank breathers so the bike is no longer ingesting it. The problem is that stuff has to go somewhere, so people put in a device to contain it all, but that said device needs to be emptied occasionally otherwise it will spill over, and in your case on the swingarm. |

As Lance and Frog said it looks like a catch can. Normally people tend to put a small automotive cone filter on the top vent. It's a little hard to tell in this picture but this one appears to have a small Radio Controlled airplane engine intake filter on the vent. I can see the petcock valve on the very bottom of the can. That is the valve you open to drain the can. Open->drain->close. Do that every two or three gas fill-ups and you should be good to go. |

Oh, and if I'm right about it being a Radio Controlled Airplane Engine, intake air filter, the filter should have a nickel sized disc made of filter material that fits in the top of the hole behind the rubber lip. Hard to see in the picture but the disk of filter material appears to be missing. If you post a close up of the piece I can verify this. |

I think the filter housing is discontinued. I can't find a picture of it. I do see a link to replacement filter disc. http://sheldonshobbies.com/products/bru-line-repla cement-air-filter-elements-for-air-cleaners-coarse -104 |

Odd place to put that. 1st one I think I've seen that was fixed to the heel guard. If you were bothered by the looks of it there (i find it atrocious but it's not my bike)it can be easily moved. Most guys usually put it beside the oil cooler which is a less conspicuous spot. |

Lance, Frog, Jim: Thank you! This definitely helps. Jim: I'll be getting a replacement filter disk and get a picture of it tonight to post. Mtnmason: I don't love it there. That is just how I bought it. It frustrates me because I cant install the passenger pegs with the catch can where it is. I'll try re-positioning it next time I can get in some garage time. |

Here's where I routed the breather on my Ulysses. Never spooges the wheel, rotor or swingarm. I would ditch that accumulator...
