What are the North American 09+ 1125 owners with failing stators supposed to do for a rotor fix? TwinMC is great but on the other side of the world from the west coast. AL at American Sport Bike isn't there yet... http://americansportbike.com/newdir/Item/16168 fall/winter maintenance time is coming |

Have a machine shop EDM the smaller holes or drill some large ones like these. http://hildstrom.com/projects/buellstator/#rotormo dification

Yeah we are in a pickle at the shop over this issue. Just hoping Bruce and Erik get parts moving soon. Got a Guard helo pilot's CR waiting... Z |

If we were to take a rotor to a machine shop. What would we tell them? Is there a specification for the EDM hole? |

I found enough info in 5 minutes of google searching. It does not have to be exact and any oil spray will reduce stator temps. A countersunk hole is drilled into the rotor spline and then EDM is used at an angle stepping the hole going larger towards the stator. It appears to be stepped from 1/32(.03)" to 3/32(.09)" The machine shop should balance it afterwards but I doubt it will need it due to the mod being in the center of the rotor. Similar to the effects of how a small amount of air flow across a voltage regulator can reduce the temp 10-20 degrees. |

I could be way off base here, as I don't know the oil flow inside the engine yet, but IIRC, the oil hole is that size for a reason. Seems like I remember reading somewhere that is the hole is too large, it will reduce oil pressure. I could be wrong, but that's what memory is telling me before finishing my first cup of coffee... Rough night last night due to middle of the night thunderstorms and a very nervous dog and wife. |

Hildstrom's idea seems fine for air cooling. perhaps both air and oil cooling? Panshovevo - I too recall the same oil pressure argument. |

Yes oil pressure is a concern and part of reason for necking the hole down. Maybe Cocheeze can get his rotor measured when he gets it back. If he is willing to do so. (Message edited by terrys1980 on August 30, 2015) |

Terrys1980, thanks for the link to Hildstrom's page. That is an excellent writeup that I've bookmarked for future reference. Most modern Harley stators do not have the windings encapsulated. I wonder how much that contributes to the overheating, and if it's necessary. |

Panshovevo YES, the big twins get the air cooling! |

Dannybuell, I'm not sure I understand your response. Are you saying Harley stators benefit from the air cooling of the motors? |

I got my rotor back and am about to reassemble, but when I pulled the rotor off the top gear came out with the rotor, is there a specific orientation for this gear? It almost seems the it is just a place holder for something since when it's out the hole it mounts in is a dead hole(doesn't go anywhere). I'm waiting on my manual to arrive so I'm hoping some of you have had the same issue or experience whip fixing the rotor issue. Also I'll take a bunch of photos of the rotor in case anybody wants to see what the hole looks like after being edm'd |

If you are talking about the balancer shaft gear then there is a timing mark. It is above the rotor and starter gear. |

I think that is it, it meshes with the gear that is on the shaft where the rotor mounts, I'll have to check for that timing mark |

Also when I pulled my rotor I found a washer stuck to it, I'm under the impression that this washer belongs on that gear? |
