It wasn't a rumor, they were originally planning on building the dirt bike but they canceled it and instead focused on the 1125R platform.

Without wishing to be negative or anything you can, at this time/ posts here, see the possible problems. Like some want to make a XT taller as they are tall and others want to make a X shorter as they are a bit short. To much power then do not twist the grip as much.

In any event whats wrong with sticking with the Uly anyway?

One loud fan is enough but now two. I saw the bike at the aim expo. I just hope all the issues we have is not continued on with these new generation of bikes.

With the right mapping, the Rotax runs very well at low rpm.
When I used some "forbidden" software and shed 12 degrees of advance at idle -
All of a sudden my headers quit glowing yellow and I could run at a low speed of 7 mph.

H-D/Buell proffered several revised spark/fuel maps, the last being pretty good.
The first few SUKKED.
My #1 complaint(I was on "infant care") was choppy throttle - riding a popcorn machine.

I have a Race ECM now but it is not much different than my OEM until you get up to redline.
Definitely better the higher you take the rpm. : )

Geared a tad lower, this platform could re-invent the Ulysses.

A more powerful Uly, XT seat height, hard bags that don't leave the bike looking like a ladder when you remove them. Lengthen the rear swingarm a tad so you can use the power.

No problems with wheels falling off, wires rubbing through. No problems with spark plugs tearing out threads, seats crushing ECMs, and stators failing rapidly.

200+mile range, mounting points for everything (skids, aux fuel, water, bags, gps) decent headlights, relatively lightweight, fun to ride comfortable and capable. Easy to access if repairs happen to be needed. Ability to change gearing to fit riding style needs.


Not asking for much really...

Other than the lack of easy gear changes and no stock hard luggage, he basically summed up my 1125R.

The 1125R has two fans, they are quieter than the single on the XB. I haven't heard the fans on the 1190s yet, but they probably are in the same ballpark.

Something similar to the KTM990SMT and/or 1190 Adventure only better. I was seriously considering the SMT but... it's gonna be discontinued. I would love a similar EBR with inexpensive and simple maintenance and infrequent service intervals. And decent Financing via GE Capitol...

We all have what we would to see.

I think (Hope) EBR has it figured out as to what its going to take to carve out a piece of the Adv Bike market. There is no doubt they are paying attention to the KTM 1190 but at this point with possibly an Oct2014 unvailing. the bike should be basically ready to go from drawing board to ordering parts to assemble this spring and testing over the summer. If not they are way behind....

I think EBR took a hard look at the Multistrada, KTM990/1190,and Triumph Explorer. Any pros or cons are well documentedfor either bike. And improved upon them. They may have even learned something from the Uly.
If they have paid any attention to BMW there will be lots of accessories available.

Fat and ugly. Maybe.

Slow. I can keep up with most bikes to 100 mph.

Air cooled. No big deal.

A Harley. It is not.

Unreliable. They can be but not my bikes.

Vibrations. I get very few with a few mods.

Underpowered. Compared to what?

Primitive. Not at all.

Hell it has a freaking primary chain! True enough. But then again so what?

I can and do outride most on the road. It is not me it is the bike. I have rode some of the best sports bikes ever made on the road and few are as good as the Uly. I am sure a AX will be better but at what cost?

I think that 64000 miles as low as Death Valley to over 10000 feet elevations without issues attests the reliability and lack cooling issues. My KLR has more uncomfortable vibrations and can even loosen lock-tite and is nowhere near as fun to ride. I see it pointless to have the added complexity and issues of chain driven overhead cams and water circulation unless it is needed to solve real engineering issues. As complexity increases reliability decreases. I am extremely happy with my Ulysses.

So 4 more valves, a water pump and some hoses and random related bits are really increasing complexity? If you look closely at your Ulysses, you basically already have the same setup. The Uly uses a (maintenance intensive) chain driven primary drive, and the complexity of a pump, hoses, and radiator is already used for the oil system.

Yes slow, in every metric. The 1125 motor has gobs more power in every part of the powerband. Want to safely get around a car in 6th gear? Just give it a tad more throttle. On the Uly, it requires you to downshift at least two gears, hold it wide open, and hope you had a long enough straight. At 100mph, the Uly is screaming for its life, the 1125R is just plodding around.

I've had it happen where I was cruising on a thruway behind some BMW sedan while on my 1125R not long after I bought it. I knew we were moving along fine in the fast lane passing traffic, but I was getting a little frustrated, "Ugg why is this BMW holding things up?". I then glanced down at my speedometer and said "Holy shit I hope that is in Kilometers". I now keep a better eye on my speed to prevent unwanted attention from the law. The bike seriously just cruises at any speed happy as a clam, with it being especially happy in triple digits. Even off the line, my 1125CR is better around town than the Uly. It makes the same power as the XB below 3k, but without the shaking, bogging down and unresponsiveness that the airheads give you. You can't even open it up in the low gears without serious risk of looping it or ending in a ditch, vs the XB is fairly easy to keep both wheels planted regardless of gear selection or throttle position.

Very big deal. Pain to keep it cool in the summer, pain to keep it warm in the winter. Hot right leg, hot ass, hot everything. Don't get stuck in traffic! This is more of a Uly thing than in general being air cooled, as I've ridden air cooled bikes that didn't have these issues to the extent that the XB does.

So what? It is the result of basing the XB motor on a piece of crap ancient Sportster motor. Too many lackluster engineering decisions got carried over like the primary chain. There is no reason it should have existed.

Actually it is you. Most people simply just can't ride. I've been on my Blast and kept up with 600s and even 1125Rs in the twisties without issue.

Sorry Froggy I seem to have upset you for some reason. Erm.

My 10 Uly has no engine issues. Pulls like a train in 5th from 60 mph, even up hill, and can over take (in 5th) easy at 90+ with just a slight twist of throttle. Thrash it up from 2nd and it is a very scary bike. I spend a lot of time in town and the Uly is very good. Mine anyway. I have no issues with the bikes running but if you do then there is something wrong with your bike. Trust me Guy it should be MUCH better than what you have had. I wish you could ride my bike because you would be amazed at how good it is.

Yes the engine is a "old stoker" and it does not "spin up" like a Rotax" engine but it does, or at least mine does, do quite well. And I had a RSV-R so I have something close to the CR/R engine set up to compare with.

I have no use for a water-cooled motorcycle engine. Been there, done that. The '09 Uly is virtually flawless. No idea what the heat issues are that people have talked about. I ride all year round here in Texas. The bike just works.

I no like HDI. But I still really dig the Buell air-cooled engines.

I've ridden both a 1125R & 1125CR, own. 2006 Ulysses. There is one thing I'm sure that I will never let happen in my lifetime is trade my Ulysses for a 1125 model!

The Ulysses is the best motorcycle I've ever owned or ridden for that matter.

Heat is heat, it doesn't matter what the engine is cooled with. Whether the the cylinder fins radiate to atmosphere, or a liquid filled radiator does the job, the same transfer to air has to occur. FWIW, the hottest bike I've ridden was my wife's Can Am Spyder, that has a water cooled Rotax 990.

After blocking off the frame opening above the rear cylinder, my stock Uly has less right side heat than my well-tuned Roadglide does.

I do hope rider heat is a non issue on the AX, excessive heat detracts from the enjoyment of the bike.

The fact is that what people expect from a bike is subjective and therefore no one bike will ever be perfect for all folk.

I grant you that my Uly has had its problems and it is true to say that they have been more than any other bike I have ever had. Saying that though they have all come from bad quality electrical parts and/or wiring problems from the factory build. This is something you will NOT want on the AX or you will still get problems.

I admit that I am an air-cooled engine fan, but not on the Uly. The engine seems to be built within an inch of its life, and it just gets too hot. Like Blake, I live in Texas, but I can't even get stuck at a long stoplight during the summer without the bike trying to melt a hole in the piston the minute I pull away. It will ping like crazy under even modest acceleration until I get to moving on a free-moving road for quite a while. Winter here is mild and seems to be the perfect ambient temps for the Uly. 95% of the miles I put on the bike happen between November and March. I barely ride it the rest of the year, sadly, but that would probably be true on any bike due to how uncomfortable the springs and summers have been here.

The Uly has its faults in droves, but I still enjoy the bike. It is good enough that it makes purchasing a replacement very difficult. Three years of shopping for my next ride, and the Uly is still in the garage.
