Anyways the heavy part looks like it is down low where it ought to be.
It would be real nice if EBR designs the AX with a nice center stand.

I think the 2nd muffler also makes the bike compliant in just about any country they would want to export to.

Look it up Froggy and let me know if that's correct

While I can't speak for other countries, they said it is 94% below the current US spec for emissions, which should make it easily pass anywhere in the world.

Now I wonder how rust resistant those cans are : )

Edit:

quote:

Similarly, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide exhaust 1190RX produced from less than 25% of those authorized by the U.S. Environment Agency (EPA) standards. Carbon monoxide emissions are only 6% of the level permitted by U.S. federal regulations.

Curious, Is second ' muffler' a catalytic converter?

My understanding is that there is no catalytic converter. If there is one, they haven't said it, and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere. It is safe to say No

If the lower muffler is anything similar to those on 1125's, the catalysts are incorporated in the inlet portions of the muffler close to where the header pipes attach. That would make it 50 states legal for EPA emissions.

Catalytic converters need to be hot to work and actually reduce emissions, so I don't think I can be in the second muffler. If it has one it'd be in the front of the first can.

Pardon my skepticism, but the MTS1200S was listed at about this weight. Once it was in my garage it rang up the scale at 520 lb ('06 Uly was 515...who woulda thunk it?)

However, I've concluded that these "mega-power" ADV bikes are a little too much for me. Mrs. Greg needs me to hang around a bit longer.

Very happy to see the "reasonable" price, however, and I wish EB (a fellow ME) all the success in the world.

Dr Greg, that is because Ducati and Buell used dry weight for the measurement, EBR uses wet weight minus fuel. A 1190RX with a full tank of gas is still under 450lbs.

The second muffler is part of the exhaust runner "quarter wave tuning" system. Proper exhaust runner length is crucial for power, torque, and overall engine performance.

See any of the threads on the 1190RX for more information on the exhaust tuning system...

Short term recovery from near bankruptcy is no great indicator of long term strength. HOG is still trading well below its pre-crash high, grossly underperforming compared to the market in general.

I would not disagree with that. What I meant was that they probably wouldn't say "oh crap" about a cutting edge sport bike because that is not their target market and Buell sales would at best only ever represent a small sliver of their volume.

Assuming we're talking EBR, Court has stated several times (and placed a bet to this effect) that this may not be true for much longer.

For me it was more so that cruiser bikers now having many metric bikes going main stream. Not mention Victory and Indian chipping away also. It just doesn't take a MBA to to the growth and profit potential in the expamding ADV bike market. Even suzuki is carving out a healthy slice with their lower cost Wee. HD left money on the table when micro managed Buell and then shuttled thwir doors because of thwir lack of market foresight......now they lack position to even be a player.....just my opinion

Hmmm...well, I have an MBA but I don't use it. HD was actually a good case study back when I was in B school-good case of protectionism with the import tariffs on the Japanese bikes, allowed them to get their feet back under them. But HD has never tried to rebrand themselves as anything other than what they have always been, and the adventure bike and hyperperformance sport bike markets are not their milieu. Could they rebrand themselves and get into those markets? Sure, just like Subaru makes family friendly sport utes side by side with the STi. Just like Suzuki makes the GSXR and the Busa and the Stroms. I guess they don't want to offend "the faithful". I agree that they blew their chance to be a player in the market, but I think the high end offerings from any maker, be it the AX or the Multistrada Pikes Peak will always represent a minority of sales. Maybe the margin on those bikes is a lot higher so fewer sales equates to more profit, but if a bike uses top drawer components the margin can't be as high as something mass produced with cheaper parts, I wouldn't think.

My wife would have a fit, but realistically I could afford about any bike I wanted, but I have a hard time paying car money for a bike. My first ride was a Kawi GPz 550 I bought brand new in 1983 for $2250...it's hard for me to choke down almost 20 grand for something that will always be a luxury for me, not a utilitarian daily driver. I will lust after alot of the new offerings but the bottom line is they probably won't represent enough of a quantum leap over the Uly to get me to part with the money.

Fat thumb issues on my last post, was from my phone at work but....

I have ridden Harley for 30 yrs, one still sitting in the garage. I have owned other brands as i am addicted to them all but I always have had a Harley. I liked Buell originally because of the Harley connection and then the innovation but fell in love with Buell because of the Uly, since the day they were originally released. My riding has changed over the years and I am more and more pulled to Adv type bikes. Seems to suit my current wander lust better than just pounding asphalt on my Ultra.

The new KTM 1190 is going to be hard to resist but I will try to wait for the new EBR AX model. If its 20k then its 20k and even though I won't like it i will write the check....probably. I hope that EBR takes a hard look at the serious ADV bike market and not just copies the features of other successful ADV bikes but can factor in items to make it his own.

I know I want fast asphalt speed, great braking, dependability, nimbleness, a good seat, a good suspension, fair off road traits, range, high electrical out put, and something I can pull my own services on. For the cost of these i think they should be there.

Great first look at the RX here, and how it might stack up against the Ducati Panigale:

http://www.cycleworld.com/2013/10/22/2014-erik-bue ll-racing-1190rx-first-look-review-photos/?cmpid=e news101013&spPodID=020&spMailingID=5812037&spUserI D=NDA4NTQ3ODUyOTYS1&spJobID=343599636&spReportId=M zQzNTk5NjM2S0

Very promising!

If I'm doing well at work when an AX comes out, I'm likely to be a buyer. The question is...do I sell the Uly at that point? No. I need to stage it somewhere where I can fly and ride it!

"What're You Expecting for the EBR 1190AX?" I am expecting them to make, as they always have, a superb bike. But the bike itself will not be the problem. The problem will be the customers, the market, dealerships and the price.

Put it this way. Buell made about 10,000 "X" series bikes but Honda has made 60 million "C" series bikes from 1958 to 2008. Not the same I know. And even with all there other bikes they are having a problem making money on them today.

And then you have the customer? Which maybe anything from it is not a "Glide", the gas tank is not big enough, I get better mpg out of my pickup truck or it does not come in the right color. Or in other words no bike is right/perfect for everyone. Which of course no maker can provide and is the nature of bikes.

A 2010 Uly has a dry weight of 425 Ib and is very good for the type. A Glide seems to start at around 600 and is near half the BHP IE Nothing like a Buell in any respect. A V-Twin engine and two wheels is about all.

My 'Glide'(Roadglide Ultra) has more HP, and far more torque to the rear wheel than the Uly. At 900 lbs+, it's also twice as heavy. It certainly doesn't do what the Uly can do in the tight stuff. It doesn't go off pavement very well either. But if you want to rack up some all day touring miles, especially with a passenger, it would be hard to beat.

I have yet to find a bike that does it all, although the Uly is the best all around bike that I've had. Too bad the wife doesn't find it as comfortable as the Roadglide.

I have a feeling that when the AX gets released, I'll be an owner. And I'll park in between the Roadglide and the Uly......

"A Glide seems to start at around 600 and is near half the BHP". That was the "basic" version not the "higher end" ones. Weight or BHP. 900 Ibs+ is not a bike it is a small oil rig on wheels, LOL. It is also, for a 2013 bike, a 1690 cc engine which is close (ish) to half as much again.

Or a Honda Fireblade/Africa Twin over a Honda Gold Wing type thing.

I know what you mean, "However, I've concluded that these "mega-power" ADV bikes are a little too much for me. Mrs. Greg needs me to hang around a bit longer." I'm also and ME and same age as you.

I added a 2012 650 Adventure VStrom to my "fleet" a few months ago and have been very please especially after adding front fork cartridges and a brace. Its handles extremely well and I get 60 MPG in the NC mountains with it!

IIRC correctly, US EPA motorycle emissions regs are VERY old, and way behind European standards. It's the excpetion the EPA hasn't bothered with.
That's why Euro bikes came with catalyst way before most others. BMW didn't want to bother with removing the cat and remapping for the US market only.
I wouldn't get too excited about being way under the US EPA emissions without some comparison data from other bikes.
That might be pretty normal.

Amen xdigitalx! Older I get, smaller the field of vision I have for huge machines and pricetags. Also complicated electronics. I can't forget a rumor while back that buell was toying with a 450 4-stroke offroad machine. Now, that sounded like fun. Anyhow, the future will tell the tale and we are along for the ride of a lifetime with Ebr.
