Maybe someone with more experience and knowledge can answer this question, what is the difference between an M2 and an S2?? |

Well...they're both carbureted 1200 aircooled V-twins with 5 speeds and they both have 17" wheels. That's about where the similarity ends. Different frames. Different seats. Different bars (standard bars on M2; clip-on style on S2). Different forks (standard on M2; inverted on S2). S2 has a fixed fairing. M2 is naked. And despite the same 1200cc displacement...the engines themselves are quite different. S2 is basically a stock 1994/1995 Sportster motor with lower compression, standard heads, standard cams, heavy flywheels. M2 depending on year is either a Lightning motor (97/98) with better cams, higher compression and better heads, or a Thunderstorm motor (99-up) with even BETTER heads, cams, and compression. Clear as mud? I strongly recommend a copy of "25 Years of Buell" as an excellent resource for anything Buell. |

Spotters guide: look for the aluminum side plates . s2 and prior bikes had them, no bikes afterward did. |

S2-fiberglass tank cover with a plastic fuel cell underneath. Last of the hand built Buells. As Lynrd said aluminum side plates which are removable for easy drive belt and isolator changes. Not so on M2's. (Message edited by buellish on October 08, 2013) |

I LOVE my 99 M2, but I had to add the tach. The handlebars fit a 49 yr old guy just fine. Best seat in the Buell business |

S2 = most beautiful Buell, but hardly BAD ASS with the stock sportster mill. M2 will run circles around it performance wise. |

Kilroy, badass comes in many forms.I'd like to invite you and your M2 to come play in the mountains of North Georgia, then we'll see if S2's are Badass or not. |

wasn't meant to be an insult, just the fact that a stock sportster motor is a little lacking.....as for the run thru the N Ga mountains, maybe I will take you up on it some day! |

You ride on a M2, you ride in a S2. |

Is the OP looking for anything specific? Or just wants a way to I.D. the motorcycles? |

It probably makes a difference *which* S2 you are lining up against. I have heard that sometimes people do things to the engine to make it more powerful... If you lined up across from Rhonda, your M2 better be in damn good tune. And mine is prettier. |

If it's only 1/8th mile, the rider is very important, a rider that can react lightning quick & get the bike out the hole WOT to get quickest possible 60 foot time & the rider that can shift gear the quickest will win. if he could do the same on all three bikes he would win on any of the bikes. but if its a full quarter mile might be different as you get to higher speeds. |
