My Sporty and S3 don't like to lug around anything below 3k. |

I talked to the PO last night and found out that in addition to having the oil changed, he had all the fluids changed prior to selling it. That's a good thing. When I told him I checked the oil at the end of a ride on Friday and it was at the low mark, he was a little perplexed by that. After further discussion, I brought up the size of the filter and he said that it was an oversize filter; I had wondered that as I've never seen one this big on a sportster engine. My question then is the low reading a result of the large oil filter and do I need to add oil to the tank? I suspect the low reading is because of the filter, but I'm uncertain as to whether I need to add oil or not. |

Check the oil hot,I do mine after the ride with it still running, I keep my oil level just above the low mark. Do not check cold as some oil will drain back into the sump, overfilling will result in the excess going blewie all over. |

Also if the oversize filter is a Dyna style it holds about 6 oz.more oil than the stocker. Filter size has no affect on the oil level since the engine is a dry sump. |

Although I bought my 99 X1 in November, I still haven't changed the fluids. I crossed the HD part number to Wix, which is 51214. I'm partial to Wix filters. My co-worker has a friend that has a wholesale account with Amsoil, so we are putting together a bulk order. As soon as that comes in the oil gets changed. I have Formula+ for the primary. That will be changed after I open the primary and swap out the old adjuster. |

Ok, I rode about 150 miles today w/my Father-in-law and the bike ran flawlessly! I just kept the rpm over 3K as much as possible and I didn't feel too much vibration; actually, very little above 3K. I didn't add oil prior to the ride and checked it at the end of the ride; it was exactly where it was Friday when I checked it after a ride. So, I added about 1/8 of a quart just to get it above the low mark. I assume the low reading is because of the oversize filter and I'm afraid to add too much and make a big mess. I LOVE MY BUELL! I love the look, the power, the handling, the sound, the fit...I just love it. I love the way people check it out when stopped at a light or a store. I have enjoyed learning about it and loving on it. I love that bikes are a common interest for me and my Father-in-law; today was my first road trip on a street bike. Since he got is H-D trike last year and his Road Glide last November, he and I have talked more than ever. Now we can RIDE! |

"I assume the low reading is because of the oversize filter" Dude, study up on dry sump oiling systems. The filter size has no bearing on oil level. |

The only time there is a oil filter scare is if the filter is too HIGH MICRON filter and the oil can't get through it because the oil pump does not develop enough oil pressure ... |

So, what's your best advice about the oil level? Add more or leave it as is? |

I have found with my 2000 M2 that if the oil level (when cool) is just touching the bottom of the dip stick, that gives me a good reading when warm. If I leave it at that level it doesn't drop any lower and pukes much less out of the breather hose. It took me a bit of time to be comfortable with the level at the bottom of the stick when cold. |

Look at it this way, if your car dip stick indicated that your engine oil was low, would you not add oil ??? The EVO SPORTSTER oil system is a wet sump system with the engine oil in a oil tank above the crank case which means the oil drains into the bottom end(SUMP) when you turn the engine off ... That simply means that you must check the oil after the engine at operating temperature with the engine running ... As soon as you pull out the dip stick plug the oil will will start to drop, SO when you first pull the dip stick out is the OIL LEVEL ... If "i" want to check a second time "i" take a short ride to get the oil back up to where "i" first chacked it ... ONE thing for sure if you put too much oil in it will puke out some where untill the engine reaches its HAPPY OIL LEVEL ... (Message edited by buellistic on March 04, 2012) |

And puke it will... I just bought my bike from a dealer on consignment. Someone overfilled the oil & after the test ride it had spewed everywhere. I got off the bike & saw the puddle forming & said to myself "Here we go" but then remembered the overfilling issue & chuckled to myself. After about 250 miles, the dipstick stays put & the oil level is where it is supposed to be. |

OK, I checked the oil this afternoon after the bike had sat 24 hours and had not been started i.e. cold. The oil was just touching the dipstick just barely lower than when hot and having been ridden 150 miles. This is what I mean by an oversize oil filter.
Will this filter effect the oil level in the tank? |

That's a 63812-90 Dyna filter with a finned cooler sandwiched in between.
The Buell/Sportster and Big twin engines are dry sump with a external 2 stage gearotor style oil pump, the first stage feeds oil to all critical lubrication points and 2nd stage (scavenge)side returns the oil to the oil tank. You could have a filter that holds 10 gallons and it would make no difference at the dipstick. Think of it like this, if you installed a larger fuel filter would it change the level of fuel in the fuel tank? (Message edited by Jramsey on March 05, 2012) |

So, is this a good set up? I assume the oil cooler is a good thing. Assuming the right amount of oil was put in by the servicing dealer, where is the rest of the oil? The bike has only been ridden about 300 miles since the service and there's no evidence of any kind of significant leak anywhere. |

don't go down on the left or you may be stranded with a punctured oil filter. |

There's no air bubble inside your filter; the oil level in the oil tank changes because the air pocket inside the motor (not the oil filter) gets partly filled with oil when it sits. Oversize oil filter means more required at oil change, not more level drop in tank when hot. If the oil is no longer in the engine or oil tank, it must have puked up a breather hose somewhere (unless it burned, which you would have noticed). Is your air cleaner element dry? |

This is the set up that was on the bike when I bought it 10 days ago. The PO had it serviced at a HD dealership prior to selling it, so I would assume the set up is ok and that they right amount of oil was put in. But, people make mistakes and it's possible that they didn't put the extra oil in to compensate for the larger filter. |

Oil level is fine, just above low level on dipstick when cold. If you go much over that, you will get the "projectile dipstick". Happened to me with my first Buell, dealer I bought it at overfilled it. I took off the seat to check the oil, put the dipstick back in and started it up, dipstick shot about 10 feet in the air! Keep your level where it's at and all will be good. |

There is nothing better than riding with a friend! The more you and your FIL ride, the more you'll become close And that oil filter could be used for a left side slider |

I suspect if you had an oil temp gauge, you couldn't measure any benefit to it. |

So, my new ISOs will be here on Thursday and I plan on installing the front one Saturday. American Sport Bike didn't have the service manual in stock, so I won't have it when I do the repair. Does anyone know if there is a thread on BWB or anywhere else that has the instructions, diagrams, and any other necessary info related to changing the front iso? |

There is an online S1 manual in the knowledge vault under manuals, should be pretty much the same procedure as your bike, good luck! |

The new isolator comes with instructions. They are counter intuitive because it mounts different than the old one. |

I knew it came with instructions, but I want to make sure I have everything I need to get the job done right and quickly. When I remove the tank, is there a shut off valve or will I need to drain the tank? Will I need a torque wrench and, if so, do the provided instructions give the settings? |

In the interests of SAFETY why would you use a SMALLER BOLT in the ISOLATOR to MOTOR MOUNT when it came with a LARGER OEM ISOLATOR TO MOTOR MOUNT BOLT(just because it comes with a smaller bolt does not get it) ??? |
