Am i being ripped? Dealer in tucson az. He says 8.1 hours of work. This has got to be BS. Am i wrong? I did the forks at 8000 miles. They were leaking. What do u guys think? And thats regular oil not synthetic. | ||

Yes. But even $200 is a rip off. There is NOTHING you can't do yourself at the 10k service... | ||

It will run you over $600 here in the north east, but it includes the fork service. (Message edited by froggy on August 25, 2011) | ||

What is what they do on 10 k service? I figured fork seals would take the most time. | ||

It sounds like he is reading the preset price on the book for the 10k which includes the fork service. 10k service on a 06-07 is: Oil and filter change, inspect oil lines and brake system, inspect air filter, check tire pressure and tread depth, change transmission/primary fluid, adjust clutch, adjust primary chain, inspect belt, idler pulley, and sprockets, check and adjust and lubricate throttle cables/clutch cable/muffler cable, check level and condition of brake fluid, inspect brake pads and rotors, replace spark plugs, check engine idle speed, check engine timing, zero the TPS, replace fork oil, test head bearings for resistance, clean oil cooler fins, and finally inspect engine mounts and stabilizer links. | ||

And you have absolutely NO way of knowing if they did the work or not. Aside from warranty work, I do everything myself just for that reason. When I do it, I KNOW it got done. New tires, brake pads, brake fluid, fork oil & steering stem bearings are incoming for mine. I'll have to take a break from building pipes to get this stuff done, but it's gotta get done soon. Sounds about right. However, if you're good enough to do forks, you're good enough to never take your bike to a shop for anything. | ||

Why not do it yourself if the money is the issue. Seems simple enough. There is no requirement that the dealer do the 10K service. Just keep a record. | ||

I was quoted $490 and the guy made it clear that it did not include the fork oil change. I looked at the owners manual and was outraged to figure out that they wanted 500 bucks to change the oil, primary oil, and spark plugs. I did it myself in less that 1.5 hours and that included new brake pads. The brake pads were not part of the dealers price either. Do it yourself. It is pretty easy if you read the service manual. Only tricky part is the rear plug. Based on several threads on this site, I did not do the fork oil change. I'll wait until 20K. | ||

Yeah thanks guys. I took the bike in for forks andvthey charged me $150. $421 isnt to bad of an issue. Its the 8 hours of work they say the do. And like you say they do it in 1 hour. I can change the oils. But i just like doing the major services done at dealer. 1.5 k 5k and now 10. I chang oil myself in between | ||

The rear plug isn't tricky - watch the video on YouTube, get yourself a wobble joint and the right length extensions, and it comes right out. I actually had more trouble with the front plug than the rear. Ended up going at it with a wrench from the side. | ||

Never forget -- There is a reason they call them "stealerships" and H-D is far worse than any of the Jap dealers from what i've learnt. If your not mechanically inclined - have someone who is show you. aside from learning something, you might get that tingly feeling of having intimately bonded with your pride and joy in a way other than just thrashing her thru your favorite twisties. Me personally -- i ditch the funnel and bend her over my knee when filling her primary hole with fresh lube. The 45 degree lean angle is good for more than just the handling! | ||

yeah i would NEVER take my bike into a harley dealer ship. i would not trust 99.9% of the techs (because they are no longer mechanics they are service techs who know how to swap out parts and thats it) with my bike. i have seen way to many •••• ups and see to many bikes damaged due to careless techs. now i know there is a few good shops around but very few and far in between. if you even come to CA i will do the 10k service for 1/2 the price if you bring your oil and filters  |
