Just thought I would formally introduce myself. I have posted a few times here but have lurked for a couple months. Been on another forum quite a bit but it appears there are quite a few more tubers here! I had my X1 for about a week before I started figuring out what I could do to it to make it my own. Thanks to the forums I have gotten many ideas and have started on a few of them. I have put about 1600 miles on it in the last couple months and love it. I have lots of ideas for customizing my bike, and after searching many hours online for aftermarket parts but not finding what I was looking for, I am having a friend help fabricate some goodies. If any one likes what we come up with.. maybe we will make more! Look forward to sharing the progress of my new project here and learning more about my tuber from you guys.

Gmaan.. I grew up in the Bay Area, been in Oregon the last 11yrs. Purpony.. Thanks. I saw your bike on BuellXB. Very nice. I look forward to posting before and after photos.. or at least progress photos. I have some crazy ideas. Wish I could afford to do everything at once... but... ya know. |

5500 when I bought it.. just over 7200 now. Yes original rear shock. Is there something I need to be aware of regarding the rear shock? |

Regarding the rear shock. Both of mine have now blown, one immediately after I bought it at a little over 10K, the other at about 17K. Ordering a Penske soon for the '99 If you don't already have it, find a race ECM. Better fuel maps and your mpg will not be affected. Your engine will like it. Your air intake appears to have a separate oil breather re-route. That is good. If you need tires, I just put Dunlop SportMax II on my '99 and really like Make sure you have your drive belt adjusted to about 2" slop on the sidestand. Once you are sitting on it, it will be tighter, If you ride two-up at all, absolutely make sure that you still have slop in it when your passenger is on there with you. If you don't, over time you'll whack your tranny bearings! Your stock rear shock is a "pull" rear shock. Adjust your rear sag by adjusting your rear shock pre-load. Loosen the big nut on the back, then turn to adjust sag to about .5" Your stock rear shock is adjustable too, compression is on the rear of the shock, rebound on the front. Compression is the initial force on the shock when you hit a bump, rebound is when the shock readjusts to a set level. Run both screws all the way in clockwise, then turn the compression counter-clockwise about 1.25 turns and the rebound about .75 turns. After you run your bike for a while, put your hand into the wiring on the back of your ignition switch. If it's red hot, you need to buy a new one. I just got one from American Sport Bike, a BWB sponsor. They are super good to the folks here on BadWeb. You also need to check your primary chain tensioner and make sure you have the new one. This will require that you remove the primary cover. The new tensioner is beefier and will wear better. And, you need to check your oil pump gear. Some of the original ones wore funny. A lot of the items you'll need to keep you bike healthy can be had from American Sport Bike. Al or Joanne there are good to us. The X1 Lightning is one great tuber. |

Eagleman.. Yea.. Nuclear Blue pops and has a purple-ish shimmer in certain light. My friend was trying to match the color in PPG with no luck. House of Color has something similar. Might avoid painting anything that color rather than have it not match. The plastics were originally white. I painted the front fender and chin spoiler gloss black (I may run without them when my mods are complete), The undertail and tank cover are aftermarket carbon fiber and the windscreen is "Buell" carbon fiber (windscreen will be for sale or trade when I start my XB lamp swap). I have a feeling some purists on here may not like my finished product... but hey.. its my friggin bike and everything I do should be able to be returned to stock pretty much.. |

Two_seasons... Thanks for the info. Some Qs if ya don't mind... If I was able to locate a Race ECU whats a fair price? I have read quite a bit about ECMspy... wouldnt tuning my ECU to match my Mods be wiser? Only current engine mod is what I recently heard referred to as econowinder? It appears the stock intake was modified to accept a K&N (not pretty but is it adequate? Shiny one eventually). I do plan on doing exhaust but still researching a bit.
It appears to have some plugs in the top of it. (old breather route?)The previous owner did the XB rocker covers with pcv valves but had the hose puking on the chin spoiler. After some research, pictured below was my solution. I plan on rerouting it to make it a little cleaner. I hid the ugly ass horn that was blocking view of those pretty cans and want to use a smaller fuel filter so I can hide it as well. It is obvious that routing everything clean did not matter with the side panels on. I plan on cutting every zip tie and hiding as much of the wiring and hoses as possible... call me a neat freak.
Put a set of Pirelli Diablos on it. I like em so far. Again thanks for the tips on what to watch for. I want a carbon fiber battery cover.. do they exist for sale? Maybe I will make one out of stainless. Hmmmm. Its like crack this thing!!!! |

The intake has those holes in it because it was part of the stock helmholz resonator inside the stock air box. |

Gotcha.. performance wise I think the only difference on say a forcewinder would be smoother bore (no ridges where those holes were plugged) maybe larger inside diameter? Like I said I plan on replacing it with something eventually. |

I plan on doing that to mine, but leave the stock airbox on. The stock box isn't exactly sealed very well, attaching the filter directly to the tube seems like a good idea. If it reduces power, well, I don't much care about top end power anyway. I rarely rev past 4k. The forcewinders look nice, but I don't think they crash well. I like the crash protection the airbox provides. |

If I crash the least of my worries is my intake. I keep it below 4000 around town but stay above 4000 and occasionally bounce it off the rev limiter when riding hard on the back roads. When I first got it I lugged it around and have learned it likes a little more action. (Message edited by NwRider on June 14, 2011) |

Make or buy the 5/8" thick aluminum spacer that goes between the TB and the elbow as the oem plastic spacer really isn't designed to support the weight of the filter and will eventually leak. Can't see it but I made a second horseshoe for the top side and added one more bolt to keep it secure. |

I hid the horn under the tank above the front rocker cover. I used a leftover P-clamp here:
I wanted to use this hole next to the isolator mount but did not have a small enough nut and bolt at the time.
When mounted to that hole there will be more room to face the horn forward (using the clamp the only way it fit without rubbing was pointed sideways)Plus the clamp is ugly and visible... again I am a neat freak. |

Nope... just re-routed them.. they were a little long actually.. just doubled them back on themselves. Zip-ties are your friend. Every time I looked at the left side of my bike all I could see was an ugly effing horn. The night I bought it I said... "first thing to do is to hide that ugly piece of plastic." Then I figured that would be a sweet place for my crankcase breather. I am going to make a bracket that mounts the breather to the horn mounting tab so it looks more "factory". I debated cutting the tab off but decided against it as the next owner may want the option to go back to stock. The horn relocation and breather/catch can took all of about 15 minutes... but I stared at my bike with a beer in hand for 3 hours before doing it! (Message edited by NwRider on June 14, 2011) |

you say horn mounting tab... my horn was mounted to the battery.. and why would you say (the next owner) come on man i love my x1 yeah it is not crazy fast but it is a wonderful bike. i bought mine 2 months ago and have put on 3000K and will never sell it in fact i want to beef it up so much i want 150 to 180 hrs yhis winter out of it.. ill post a pic when im done relocating horn tonight i am doing it right now. |

Battery? Really? Mine is an 01 and it was mounted to the tab my breather filter is zip tied to. I may keep it.. at least for a few years. |

i just got the horn mounted to the open hole by front iso... pics soon.. very tight in there. and yes it was on the neg on the batt..??? idk why. |

There was a fan kit offered that mounted to that tab... maybe your horn was relocated due to it having the fan kit on it??? Nice. Glad you liked my idea. My horn had a flexible bracket attached to it. You can easily bend it around to suit your needs. |
