Anyone done this mod before? Did you like the results? If I have to go in and replace my clutch I was thinking of doing this mod. Up side is faster acceleration out of the hole. Down side is less top speed, slightly higher revs at the same speed, and maybe gas mileage? Any other pros or cons I'm missing? |

Do a search on here for "XB9 Primary". You pretty much summed it up, most of those that have done it are very happy with it, but it is a waste of money unless you are constantly offroading. For the other 99.9% of us it just reduces top speed, increases cruising RPMs, and reduces fuel economy. Also, it isn't something that can be swapped in 5 minutes. |

I'm thinking of doing it to help with the low end grunt. The only thing I don't really like about the Uly is the lack of power below 2500 or so rpm. |

Supposedly gives better/more engine braking. Something I miss on other bikes I've owned. I wish I could ride both side by side.. |

Do the search and see all the old threads, as Froggy says, but I disagree that it is a waste of money unless you off-road. I did the switch 2 years ago after frying my clutch on a truck trail after only a few miles. I have done zero off-road since on the Buell (it just isn't the right tool), but I still like the XB9 gearing very much. I don't do much expressway of straight line running, but I do about 1 long trip like that each year and have never regretted the change. Maybe if you always ran 80mph+ you would feel differently, though. I like the extra "jump" out of corners, though it might make you shift a little more often, since the gears will feel closer together. I bought the parts from American Sport Bike and did all the work myself in about 1/2 day. I did not notice much, if any, change in MPG after doing this. Still in the upper 40's under my normal conditions. Note, though, that I run at lower speeds in twisty roads, and have never seen or attempted the kind of MPG numbers that Froggy has posted. You will only feel more engine braking if this change makes you run at higher RPM than you were before. |

I did the switch a couple months ago and I think this is the perfect gearing for the Uly (short of a six-speed.) It makes a big difference in stop and go driving, doesn't lug on the highway and worked fine for a track day too. |
