Based on Buell's recent demise - What are some of the must-have parts we should consider... both now, and into the near future? EDIT: Saying that Harley will keep making our parts for 5 - 7 years into the future is BS - they can stop anytime they want - just like they stopped making Buells. . Hmmm - Yeah not much in the way of aftermarket parts to supplement the factory equipment. Since I plan to keep mine for a long while I'm thinkin things unique to a Uly, not available from other sources & not repairable: VR, ECM. | ||

Drive belts. I imagine the aftermarket will pick up as factory support tapers off. Al Lighton or somebody similar will buy up all the remaining stock of factory parts at the end of 7 years if Harley doesn't hold on to it. Thank goodness a lot of the wear parts are off the self commercial or common with Sportsters. | ||

When it comes down to it...neither Buell nor HD builds ECMs. My guess is, once the factory no longer supports them, the manufacturer will likely step up. I know HD uses Delphi...not sure who Buell sources from though. Also, once the HD corporate stranglehold is gone...perhaps we'll see more reprogrammers and the like. I know my Shelby-Dodge cars have a slew of custom SBEC (single board engine controller) manufacturers - socketed EEPROMs, fresh software, etc. I can call any of ten or fifteen vendors right now and get a new custom computer for my 89 Shelby CSX-VNT - a car they only built 500 of. Total. If the market is there...the vendors will come. | ||

Suzuki RE-5s became extinct because Suzuki ceased support for the electronics. CDI units were weak and were no longer in production a few years after the bike went out of production. When the supply of CDIs was exhausted, production was not taken up by the aftermarket. RE-5s went the way of the dinosaur. I vote for ECMs. Mark SE AZ | ||

It needs to be installed on your bike then programmed on your bike. The ECM does a lot more than the older ones, including things like storing the odometer reading. ECM failures are rare, I wouldn't bother keeping a spare. Cross that bridge when you come to it. | ||

Something nobody's mentioned- fuel pump. I'll bet it's one of the things we'll find is common with an auto or other motorcycle application (at least the pump assembly itself). It'd be good to start figuring out any components like that that can be obtained from outside sources- fuel injectors and various engine sensors also come to mind. | ||

i imagine it will become just like the tubers... the xbs will soon be parted out like the tubers...buell dropped interest in the tubers overnight.. with buell gone, parts will prolly be available until the warranty on the xbs is gone, then adios..you can see from my profile, that ive owned a bunch of buells for a long time.. this time, i think the bikes have "had the lick", so to speak.. thats just my opinion.. as far as the ecm, i removed the ecm from my S-3 and replaced the entire package with daytona twin-tec stand alone equipment... with the 08 models having a different system, i wonder if anyone will pick up on it.. you couldnt even make a mutant chopper out of the 08s unless you addressed the crank ecm pickup thingy. | ||

My wife and I have Excelsior Hendersons. Belly up in 1999 after producing approximately 1968 bikes. Can still get most parts from those that bought the remaining inventory. I stocked up on the rubber parts unique to the bike, stator, and exhaust. Will not buy anything for the Uly. If I did not own one, I would be buying one now! | ||

What about a Voltage Regulator ? Available else where or 1 of a kind ? | ||

I believe the VR for 2006-2007 Ulys with their 3-phase alternator is unique to Buells and the later version uses the same part as Sportsters. It may be possible to convert the older Ulys to the new parts if you swap the stator and the VR. I suppose we'll have to figure things like this out over the next few years. |
