Hello, i'm posting here to know if anyone have crankshaft failure on her XB12. On the buell french board we have now 6 guys with '04 XB12 that have the front connecting rod bearing out of service. I'm trying to list xb12 owners with the same problems. hope not for you |

Francisco, what else was reported? Mileage/kilometer-age at failures? Failure of material? Lubrication system? Engines with only typical pipe/filter/map mods? Can you tell I have an '04? : ) You wrote, "front connecting rod bearing out of service". Front connecting rod is the 'inner rod'; riding on common crankshaft journal with between two 'forks' of rear cylinder's connecting rod. Is this typical to engine's design: front rod fails first? |

sorry for my english front connecting rod bearing seems to fail first. Any bike is stock but only with aftermarket pipe, KN airfilter or FAST , race ecm. All bikes have between 20000 and 40000 km. All bikes seems to be manufactured on 2004 and only 1204 cmc versions are affecteds. 10 bikes on 2 months on the french buell forum and anyone here ??? |

Google displays plenty of 'hits' with hot-rod Sportster crowd; same rod, different cylinder. Quick read: higher rpm = more risk bearing failure. '08 Thunderstorm's crank pin increased from 1.25-in to 1.50-in diameter. |

IN the last 4 or 5 years I have heard of Maybe 2 Crank Failures as you say, However, Thats not to say the Cranks are at Fault, but other internal problems, that may have caused them,OR Guys who like to Bounce of the Rev. limit all day who knows.... HArd to even think of the claims you have made?? HMmmmmm |

Question - What does "bouncing off the rev limiter" have ANYTHING to do with a rod or crankshaft being damaged? Mike |

what means " bouncing off " ? Google can't translate this to readable french |

Well Mike put it this way, IF you are the one who likes to Hit the HIGH REVS all the time ( Rev Limiter ) ...Would ya NOT think that would be harder on the bottom end as well as other internals?? HMmmmmmmmm??? Like I said, I have been on this Board as well as others,For many years.... First I have heard of all these Cranks going bad. There has been one here and there, but the amounts quoted within here seems a little far fetched... |

Rotor, that is English slang for holding the throttle wide open even though the rev limiter has been activated. Are there 6 failures or 10? ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on June 08, 2009) |

Constantly hitting the rev limiter on any gasoline powered engine will always lead to shorter engine life. |

My bike had this problem. Started as a little knock around 23,000 miles turned into a big knock at 26,000. Cost $3500 to rebuild the motor it was 2 months outside of warranty. The way it was explained to me is that it is a problem with the bearings. That is the connecting rod that is split. |

Greg, you wrote, "That is the connecting rod that is split." Forked connecting rod failed? |

Glitch I have been thinking the same thing, seems like the 03's in particular. Appears to be less problems from the 03's, clutch cable retainer for example. |

Yes, you got the better clutch cable retainer, but the newer bikes got the better bearings, better mirrors, better FI, better colors, better frames, better trans, better lights, better belts, no first year gremlins, and it seems like everyone has an 03, so the newer years are worth more because they are rarer. |

Let's see; 1) use ECM Spy to re-set mighty XB's rev-limit to 5500 and 2) reduce oil change intervals to 1500 miles ... Man, it's gruesome what this forum does to my garage/ride ratio. : ) |

Whoa whoa...better colors??? That's subjective. Besides. Paint comes in all colors. |

perhaps the 104 cmc engine has excessive piston speed at 6800rpm. perhaps lighter pistons like Wiseco's can help. i can't see here 984cmc with the same problem. mine has 44000km, i ride it hard end frequently near rpm limit and my tuned engine is still running good |

Rotor, not sure if it is an issue on only the 04's, but my 06 XB12 has 64,000km on it and still going strong. |

wheelie's in a stunting capacity may effect something to that effect may as the motor is filled in any situation supposedly but I would think constant elevation in a stunting type senario could give way to front rod damage but I honestly think the valve train would be damaged first |

My pinion shaft sheared off the crankshaft at 23000 miles on my 03 xb9. not sure what caused it but the side bearinng was worn and severly pitted..got a 12 in it now |

A question I haven't heard asked yet. What kind of oil were these bikes running? |

My 2004 xb12r crank bearings crapped out on me about a month ago... In turn the piston hyper extended and hit the valve which bent the connecting rods which.......Ahhh, you get the picture. Yea, I beat my bike senseless..... stuff happens.... Suck it up and build it better the next time around. |

I attend MMI and we went over that problem its manely for all xb12 its called the death shake. it happens with all 1200 buell and sporty engines it happens first to buells because people ride them the way they should be ridden. but sportys will have problem to if ridden hard and or lot of miles. only fix is new set of flywheels and or a shop with a 50 ton press and a blanacer for cranks. if that helps any bit let me know |

Buellmanran, So how does one balance these buell cranks xb`s? what special equipment needed? I know of guys with over 150,000 on their 1200`s no problems??? |

they call it a blaanacer but manely its a truing stand make sure its has no hop and run out when pressed back together... And its not a problem that has to happen.. i should have refraised my post but to techs known as the death shake |
