Just how much does the IRS take from us in one year? I don't think I have ever heard that number. |

http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/14/pf/taxes/_federal_ tax_revenue/index.htm Projected individual income revenue for first half of 2009 is ~$440B, according to that report. ...or do you mean the actual percentage each of us pays after deductions, etc? |

I still don't get it. Do you want to know the total federal tax paid by United States Citizens, or do you want to know the operating budget of the IRS to see how much of our taxes it actually keeps? |

Considering 2009 is a recession year and revenues are down, I think it's fair to say it would be in the $2T range during a level or growth year (that chart shows something like $900B projected revenue for 1H 2009). People get a little overly focused on individual income taxes. The number that pisses me off is the 'social insurance' portion of the pie. It's nearly as big and unlike income taxes I get no benefit from them now, or likely ever. SS and Medicaid will be long since defunct by the time I'm of age to take part. One could make the argument that I benefit indirectly when people I care about (say, a retired grandparent) make use of medicaid, but meh. I read an interesting statistic that something like 30%-40% of a persona's lifetime medical expenses occur during the last 3 months of life. If we weren't such a clingy society we'd remove an enormous portion of our health care costs. |

'08 Revenue isn't in yet, but I believe Tax Revenue for 2007 was $2,600,000,000,000.00 (2.6T) (Need to find & confirm via a valid source) The IRS budget for '08 looks to be $11,408,997.00 (11.4M) according to this: http://www.irs.gov/pub/newsroom/budget-in-brief-20 08.pdf That along the lines of what you were looking for? |

$2,600,000,000,000.00 (2.6T) Man that's BIG number.... and they can't figure out that if that's what you are going to take in, that's all you get to spend? |

I said it once before somewhere here, but if this stuff gets under your skin and pisses you off you NEED to watch this 30 min movie http://www.iousathemovie.com/ It gives a good picture of what the federal gov takes in and what it spends....or has promised to spend in the future. Its non-partisan and trashes the current politics/policies/practices of Washington in a very professional and informative manner. |

Does that only include Income Tax? Or does it include all the "hidden" taxes we pay? Such as "Sin Taxes" (cigarettes, alcohol, non-diet soda, etc)? If you include the taxes at the State level, you get into Sales Tax, Luxury Tax, Property Tax, DMV-related "fees", Payroll taxes, medicare, etc. As far as the individual contribution goes, people tend only to look at the things that hit their paycheck. The actual percentage than an individual pays in taxes and fees to the "government" must be astronomical if you were to include it all. GO FAIR TAX!! ->ChelleM |

The $2.6T is FEDERAL Tax revenue (Income, gas, corporate, etc.) States have their OWN hands in the cookie jar as well. |

Wouldn't it be fun to keep track of just how much you/we/me pay in "taxes" for a year? Fed. State Local Sales.... I bet people would not be very happy at the end of that year.. |

It's hard, since we don't really know how much of the $5+ we pay for say, a 6-pack of beer or a few gallons of gas is ACTUALLY going to taxes, separate from the Sales tax. I think people would be horrified if they found out how much in actual taxes - i.e., money of ours that goes to some government agency - we actually pay in a year. Don't forget the fees paid through the phone bills, electric bills, gas bills, all those little mystery fees paid to some government agency. Not to mention the fees that you indirectly pay for to businesses, like what business pay to, maybe have the sprinkler systems checked every year, "license" fees for DMV, for inspection fees, etc. All that goes to the government. It's incredibly offensive. ->ChelleM |

Don't forget the "embedded" tax, which is factored into everything you buy. This is within the sales price, not the sales tax added afterwards. Most estimates put that at 23% of the cost of everything you buy. Kilroy |

Try this for the state/local lookups: http://www.census.gov/govs/www/qtax.html Tables 1, 2 & 3 make for some 'interesting' reading when added to the $2.6T for Federal. |

Too much. Heh...I don't necessarily disagree, but my problem with the taxes I'm paying isn't the fact that I'm paying them, or how much...it's that the @#$%ing retards receiving the money shouldn't be trusted with a damned dime - they prove time and time again that they are completely incompetent when it comes to money management, or discerning what a legitimate use of taxpayer money is. ...they're like that kid from the Shel Silverstein poem whose dad gives him a dollar, and he trades it for two quarters, because two is more than one (and so on). We're the ones happy to get our 5 pennies at the end of the poem, unfortunately. |

Wouldn't it be fun to keep track of just how much you/we/me pay in "taxes" for a year? Fed. State Local Sales.... I just totaled my Fed/State/Local income taxes yesterday when I sent my payment in. Let's just say I bought someone in gov't a nice new truck.... I bet people would not be very happy at the end of that year.. I'm not. P.S., I know that my money goes into the general acct, but I like to think all of my money goes to the military to keep us safe and none went to the bailouts, what I pay extra next year will go to the bailouts. |

There is a reason Maryland overtook New Jersey as having the highest median household income in the nation. One only need look south to Washington, D.C. While the average American is busting their ass trying to make a living, their "public servants" are racking up ever increasing cost of living increases, BONUSES, a superb health plan and weeks and weeks of paid vacation and sick leave. It's totally out of control. |
