Won't go into gear. If I shift it into first and let out the clutch it just makes a god awful noise but won't move. With the bike turned off it rolls in gear like it would if it was in neutral. I'm stranded about 20 miles from home, anyone have any ideas? I have tools here if its something simple. Please help |

Pete: My '98 T'Bolt had several similar anomalies. Mine turned out to be a poorly adjusted shift pawl and, in a second incident, an errant pawl return spring. These parts are located behind the clutch basket in the primary, and although they are reasonably accessible . . .I suspect it is not a "side of the road" type job. I hope it is something less involved . . . Don Casto Boulder, Colorado |

I'm actualy stuck at my wife's car dealership with access to a service bay although I don't have the manual here. Would it be an adjustment or replacing a part? |

You wouldn't happen to have a schematic that you could email me would you? |

You aren't getting at that shift pawl for a quick fix... the whole clutch / stator / primary chain assembly has to come off. Big nuts, and fussy torque specifications. Plus you have to remove the primary cover... so if you have the original paper gasket you need one of those also. If you have a metal one you can reuse it. Sounds like the pawl, but it could also be related to the 5th gear drive assembly. Even LESS of a quick fix. So about your only choice at this point is slap that sucker in second with the bike off, start it up, don't touch the shifter again, and take back roads, unless that is a really well equipped bay and you can dodge the gasket problem. You can run 20w50 in the primary fine to get home if you loose the fluid. (Message edited by reepicheep on February 25, 2009) |

If memory serves, I found the spring wandering in the bottom of the primary case. The adjustment is explained in the manual. I have excerpted pages from the service manual into a PDF file. If you will send me your email address by PM I will attach the file in return. Don |

Turns out the front drive pulley is shot. Its a 29 tooth and not a 27 tooth. |

Pulley? How did that hurt shifting? Or was it the 5th gear drive assembly? |

Probably sheared the splines in the pulley and wouldn't transfer drive torque, just make noise, I'd guess. |

Thats exactly it Sparky. Yeah it would shift and go into gear fine but without that pulley sprocket no power gets to the belt. Anyone know of anyone with parts for sale for 98 S3 who might happen to have what I need? HD wants about $250 for the pulley and another $25 for the gasket. I also gonna need the nut, lock plate, and the screws for the lock plate. I dont need the spacer that goes between the nut and the sprocket though. I can just reuse the one I have. |

Heh a couple on Ebay (29 tooth also) hardened aluminum with all the hardware 110-120 bucks. #360123304920 and #350115246400. That should work for ya. |

I did buy the 360------ one. I want to try it on one of mine so it revs less at hwy. spd. Sorry. The MPH change should not be much of an issue for just 1 pulley change but if I did both well I would probably have to find a Euro speedo or always keep the speed factor in mind. |

Yeah I just recently found out about that 29 tooth thing. I have posted before about how this S3 of mine is an orphan and I don't know any history on it. The guy at HD told me that the 29 tooth is a import and the domestic buells have a 27 tooth front final drive pulley. Huh... Maybe this S3 of mine was brought in from out of the country. I can't see someone replacing it before me with the 29 tooth. Huh, hmmm... |

I think I would be able to replace it with a 27 tooth right? Only problem would be if I run out of room to adjust the belt thats on there once I get it back together. I don't want to have to buy a new belt. Ahhh I like it the way it is, no need for change. |

Do what ever you want but just changing the front pulley should not change to much for you. |
