Here is the circumstance: Ran out of gas yesterday and had a buddy of mine bring me some and he brought enough to fill my tank. after riding it for less than a mile i noticed that it PINGED when i barely got into the throttle, so he must have brought me some really gas. I was out for a ride today to try to burn some of it off so i can put some good gas in it. I was at a stop light and when it changed green and i go to take off, as soon as i get to about 3,500 in first and about to shift to second, it just dies...no sputter, no miss....JUST DIES! I was able to get it started again but it runs like complete CRAP. It would sit at idle without dying, and it sputters a ton of white smoke and has NO power. It takes a lot of working the clutch to get it to take off and not die on me. it sounds almost like its running on one cylinder and for awhile the engine light was flashing pretty fast (a little faster than how fast the turn single flashes). Any help with what this might be would be great considering the bike is my ONLY means of transportation. I just hope it's nothing big..... |

RaymondT has a similar problem, he is replacing his fuel filter, a process which also drains the fuel from the tank. He had to drop the swingarm to drop the fuel pump and filter. May want to pm him. |

im pretty sure it isnt diesel, but im gonna be draining all the crap in it now and putting some REAL gas. and i'll send RaymondT a pm to see if its the same thing. And just to let everyone know, it will sit at an idle now and not die, BUT it still sounds really rough, and if i barely touch the throttle it sounds like the valves are gonna break from all the pinging |

Drain it and put some in a bucket, throw a match into it. You'll find out pretty fast if it's diesel or not... |

Will diesel run in these bikes? My first thought was premix or gas that's sat forever. Drain the tank, put in KNOWN clean premium gas, replace plugs and try again. BTW, assume that Mr2shim is kidding. At least, do the test far away from anything. Boom is gas, match out is diesel. Don't do the test. Aren't fuel and diesel different colours? |

And I'd suggest be dressed for the ride when you try again. Ride for about half an hour. A test run of a couple of minutes will just dump whatever's in the line on the plugs and that will be a different problem but you won't be able to tell. |

i plan on going to Chevron and getting some Premium. I would like to find a station around here that has 93 octane gas, but everything around here is max of 91 octane. And i thought that it advises AGAINST putting octane boosters in the gas for our bikes? Thanks for the info, i won't be able to do anything for a few days, but hopefully its just the gas and a fresh tank will do it better. Oh, i went out and to get it started now, i have to give it throttle and work it to keep it running........poor bike, i hope it forgives me |

im pretty sure it isnt diesel I'm pretty sure it is. At least partially. Heavy pinging (diesel SHALL burn by it's own) and gray smoke is typical for diesel in such cases. Drain the remainings or get the highest octane fuel available, fill up and ride. Refill often, no more action required. |

i couldn't harm him....his intentions were good. he might have just gotten his gas cans mixed up.....not sure though. |

Probably not. Your profile shows a 2006. Unless you've got high mileage and/or a carbonned engine, everything should stay good. The sooner you can get out and ride the better. Don't do test runs. It runs right now, take comfort but don't test until you can go for a long run. Have somebody ride with you or follow, just in case. If you plan for a possible breakdown, it won't happen. |

Did your buddy get ya some Regular instead of Premium? As for octane booster, just get some that is safe on O2 sensors. |

i dont know where he got the gas...but im just gonna assume that its just gas scented water with what it has done to my bike. and what is considered high mileage on a buell. it has about 16k right now on her. |

I've ran 2gallons of 115octane at the drag strip, fine as far as I can tell. I never put booster in my bike, so there can be different effects from pure115gas to booster. For a single time period I dont think it'll harm it, it may just clean the injectors, lines, & whatknot |

IMHO Could have been a two-cycle oil gas mix.. it would start but run like sh** and lots of white smoke as the two cycle oil burns.. (Message edited by Xbpete on January 11, 2009) |

Especially not stolen diesel, right Court? Gads . . . that was 1996 and it seems like yesterday. Bad karma indeed. . . . 7 miles from a paved road, snow, sleet and a Buell that was not to be public for another 7 months that I was trying to "hide". If it weren't for bad luck . . . .

Before you go dropping the swingarm and pulling the fuel pump assembly, try changing your spark plugs. It may be something as simple as a fouled plug. |
