The story:

A while back I was riding along when I says to myself, "Self, I think the sound of my bike is different." I stopped to see what all the uproar was about, and found that me front header flange nuts were missing, creating an exhaust leak. I thought to myself, "shit." I went and got new nuts (for the bike), put 'em on, and then a couple weeks later it happened again, this time with a lovely broken stud as icing on the cake.

Well I was driving around sounding like a harley with an intestinal problem for a while, but I managed to get in touch with Shred, a super cool local badwebber who offered to help me drill out the stud, so we tore into it last week. The drilling went really well, but the last shards of the stud just wouldn't come out, so we gave up for the night.

Last night I go back over to finish the job, and when I pull into the garage Shred says, "Your back cylinder sounds loud." We got to looking, and there it was...ANOTHER broken stud, this time on the rear cylinder. I said, "Time to drink."

So now my bike sits, in Shred's shop awaiting surgery. The wife came and picked her drunk husband up, took me to work today.

When we took the muffler off in preparation for rotating the motor down, we found the muffler-to-engine mounting bolt was gone. No sign of it. That was the root of the problem, the studs were holding too much of the weight. Sucky.

I'd be even worse off if there weren't such awesome people on badweb who are willing to lend their knowledge and time to help people out. The Buell community is the best, and I'm determined to pay forward and keep it that way!

Thanks for sharing and adding another thing for me to check monthly. Man these things require almost as much looking after as kids.

P.S I'm drunk and don't own any kids

Just wait till you sober up, and someone walks into your driveway and says "Hi Dad".
Just sayin...

Adam,
Sorry to hear man. So if you still want to tackle the Ventura Rack mount while the Uly is down, check your email and give me a call.

When we took the muffler off in preparation for rotating the motor down, we found the muffler-to-engine mounting bolt was gone. No sign of it. That was the root of the problem, the studs were holding too much of the weight. Sucky.

That happened to me too recently. Pulled up to a stop sign in my complex and saw a bolt on the ground. Figuring it would probably be me who would stick it in a tire if I left it lying there I picked it up. Since it said "HD" on it I figured it might have fallen off my neighbor's bike.

For some reason I thought I should check my Uly when I got home. Maybe because the bolt wasn't chromed. Sure enough it was mine, the one through the front muffler mount to the engine, sheared off at the end of the threads. Threaded end gone along with a new special HD lock nut.

Checking over the rest of the bike I then found a front exhaust flange nut gone too. It had only been about a week since I had replaced the special HD lock nut when I replaced the front muffler strap. If I hadn't seen that broken bolt on the ground I probably would have ended up with a broken stud too...

Acav - sorry about your troubles with your Uly. You truly have found some good Badwebbers in the 3%er's. Hope you get it back up and running soon.

I lost a stud on my 9sx the same way.

I was the last one to have that bolt out, so I have nobody to blame by myself for it going on walkabout...

Same here, man. I took the muffler off and painted it, put it back on and must've missed the torque spec on that bolt or something. The Buell motor can be pretty unforgiving if you don't tighten things properly.

I am going to molest your bike tonight...

If you show up and the motor is on the floor dont worry, I know where **most** of the bolts go.

Operation Uly rescue went well tonight.

N12R/Charlie and I decided to split this the job into 2 nights, sense we both work, have kids, and multi task.

Tonight we took the uly apart...yes its in pieces. Took about an Hr. to have the engine sitting there on blocks of wood and jack stands, lol!

Charlie finished the drilling rest of the front stud out were Adam and I had started last week, then Helicoiled the front while I started on the rear broken stud.

Used my Blue Point Snap-on drill/extractor kit, worked great like it usually does.

We replaced the other front and rear studs too.

Do it right, 3%er style!

Booked for the rest of the week, so we'll put it all back together on Saturday.

I'll try to get pics up tomorrow, I'm whooped 5am comes quick.

Adam, You'll be back on your Uly soon

Charlie, That was fun, its been to long. Had a blast!

Some things are best left unknown! Actually your bike couldn't be in better hands.

I got a call from these goons last night "post-operation" and I could just tell they were into mischief. The tone of Shred's voice just said, "We just did some crazy sh*t to your bike, man!" Charlie in the background saying, "We're crossing your Uly with a Honda Hawk!" I swear if my bike has clip-ons on it the next time I see it I might have to get upset.

I know the bike is in good hands, though. Better I'm sure than some of what goes on behind the "iron curtain" at dealerships sometimes. Can't wait to see pictures of the carnage, though. EEK!

As to this missing bolt, what bolt is this? My muffler is held on by 3 straps, and also the clamp that attaches it to the headers. Is there another attachment?

IIRC there is a bolt just in front of the interactive exhaust valve that mounts the muffler to the bottom of the engine, in addition to the 3 straps and the header clamp.

Can anybody verify? My bike is an hour away from me right now in about a million pieces.

Only two really big pieces, sheees...

Yes there is a bolt holding the front muffler bracket that holds the strap. I have a bolt for you at Shreds place.

I keep having this mental image of a zebra or a water buffalo that has been torn apart by hungry lions. Oh the humanity!
