I rode 30 miles yesterday (60 to 70 mph) and the outside temp was about 70 F degrees. I had the air inlet to the oil cooler covered with aluminum tape because it has been much cooler than 70 lately since its November now. My fan never came on and when I quit riding the oil in my swingarm read 180 F. The fan never came on until I shut her down. I was kind of surprised that having the oil cooler covered didn't make the fan come on. I may have to tape over the seat dam holes for the winter otherwise I fear the engine oil will have a tough time heating up to proper temp. 180 to 190 degrees is right where I like the oil to finally top out at in the swingarm tank as measured by my oil temp dipstick. Yes, condensation boils at 212 degrees, but with the swingarm oil tank at 180 to 190 degrees the oil within the engine up around the heads is plenty hot to boil off condensation. I even read somewhere that Buell went to the larger oil cooler in the 08' to keep oil at 180 F, I assume leaving the oil cooler. When the rear head is hot enough at shutdown to signal the fan to run, it means that the rear head is hot enough to cook the oil. I've had the fan come on at shutdown when my swingarm oil dipstick only registers 150 degrees (for whatever that info tidbit is worth). | ||

Why are you worried about the oil getting hot enough? That seems surprising to me, as hot as these seem to run. Have you seen very low temps in your swingarm? Do you do a lot of short trips in cold weather? I would expect a very large difference between the max oil temp and the temp in the swingarm. I am just curious, as the thought of keeping heat IN never occurred to me on this bike. I was riding Saturday in temps from 40-55F, and speeds from stop-n-go to 60mph cruising on the BRP (er, I mean 45mph since that is the speed limit), and still had my fan come on a few times while riding (as well as almost every time I shut off the bike). I am currently stock, as I removed all the Odie heat blankets for winter. Running Mobil 1 15W50 for oil. Bike has about 8,500 miles. - just wondering | ||

Electraglider_1997.....I'm with you on the oil in the heads being plenty hot. People seemed worried about the oil not getting hot enough. It is an air cooled engine with a cyl. buried in the frame and we have all been on one(I hope). That oil inside the engine is getting hot enough to boil out any water. | ||
