OK, We are off to Florida (Orlando/Daytona) for vacation tomorrow with the grandkids. Does anyone have any tips for good places to see or eat that are different from the usual Disney fare (which of course we'll be doing too  ) and off the beaten track? | ||

Check out the beaches on either coast. Drive on the beach at Daytona or enjoy the pure white sand and gentle surf at Siesta Key (Sarasota). Or if you want to see what a Category 4 hurricane can do come visit Punta Gorda. Of course you'll need to bring your own water, ice, and generator... | ||

We went to Disney last year about this time, actually, went Labor Day weekend and the following week, found out that was the best time to go, great weather and hardly anyone there. We did the Disney thing, pretty much the entire time. We went to the House of Blues (Downtown Disney) to eat, took the kids, they had some of the best food I've had to eat at restaurant in a lonnnnng time. | ||

Daytona area: The Wreck Bar/Rest. Main St. on the intercoastal waterway JB's Fish Camp is a must on New Symrna Beach (south of Daytona) Orlando: check out RaceRock on Int'l Drive downtown Orlando nightlife (after 11:00) | ||

I'll 2nd the Race Rock suggestion. Have been there quite a few times & the food is good, the atmosphere is great for gearheads. Spidy, Gatorland has gotten rather pricey..but isnt everything? Still a cool place to check out. Want to have some fun there, go to the top of the observation deck overlooking the gator pond. Wait till folks down below are hanging their hands over the railing on the lower deck & then throw either some small scrap food or even ice cubes from a soft drink into the water. The gators start thrashing & it totally blows the minds of the unsuspecting people below you. | ||

Parrot Jungle in Miami is nice. Pretty gardens and beautiful birds. Watch your fingers(don't ask). SteveH | ||

St. Augustine, Daytona, Orlando, Miami, the Keys - lived in Fl 12 yrs - those are the places that I remember most, though others come to mind as well - Cassadega, Manitou Springs are nice also. GT - JBOTDS! EZ  | ||

The upper gulf coast Destin/Fort Walton/Navarre/Pensacola is really a best kept secret. This week I went on a dolphin cruise for $30 (two people), snorkled on some kick ••• sugar sand beaches (for free), swam with nurse sharks, dolphins, and sting rays (for free), and ate at some world class restaurants (not free). It's all here, the bad part is getting around. There are no roads, too many cars, and no one knows how to drive. | ||

personally i prefer an 870 with a pistol grip, and extended mag, in 12 gauge if traveling by car. for side trips into polite company, or on motorcycle, i strongly recommend something in .45 ACP, either Glock, or a 1911 variant. oh and the keys are nice this time of year |
