I have a S3 -98, which I had to change the speedometer cable in April, but now it is blown again (after only 3000 miles).
Anyone who knows any reason why this happens. Only bad luck?

I just did my first cable replacement on my '98, which had broken after 50,000 miles. I always route the cable as carefully as possible... trying to maintain the most direct route to the speedometer with the fewest turns... definitely no "hard" turns. I probably spend too much time routing it! Also, I regularly lubricated the cable, including the new one I just put in. Other than that.. if the cable is installed correctly and lubricated, I don't have a clue. Could it be a problem with the drive or speedometer momentarily locking up? I've never had either apart, but I would think the drive is a rather simple affair that isn't likely to fail. My guess is bad luck! How many miles did the first one last?

I went through 3 cables on my 1998 S3T before finding that my speedo was the problem. Unless you have something to spin the speedo at a high RPM, you may need to find a shop to check the speedo.

Smadd; The first one broke after 12.000 miles. It was changed at a shop during servicing, so I hope they lubricated/ routed as recommended... The next one I will change myself.

Lake_bueller; What was wrong with the speedo? How did you find this/ fix it?

Don't know what was wrong with the speedo. I just deduced that I couldn't go through 3 cables in less than 400 miles. I took the speedo out and had someone attach the insert end of the cable to a high speed drill. When we spun the drill, you could hear "grinding" in the speedo. I just bought a replacement off ebay for $25.

Thanks! I'll try one more cable, and if this one doesn't work I will check out the speedo. Can't see how the drive can cause it...

Mine just broke after 19k, I have got 21k now and it's working. We'll see if it survives the Newfoundland trip.
