My two biker brittany's, Brutus(left) and Stinger(right). They are interested in any motorcycle driving by the house, especially v-twins. They can recognize the sound of my thumper coming down the road, and sprint to the garage door to impatiently wait for me to enter. |

My youngest nephew is an avid bird hunter. Years ago his then roommate had a small poodle, Charlie.
One day nephew wanted to go hunting and decided to take the dog along just for kicks.
Turned out that Charlie was the best bird dog nephew had ever hunted with! Worked a field, pointed, flushed and retrieved like he'd been doing it all his life.

Poodles can be very good retrievers.
Personally I prefer a dog that can "retrieve" a much larger prey than birds.

Here is the story behind that getup on Arko.
I had a house guest for a few months by the name of Barbara Hoard. She was one of the first persons to import a Rotty into the US and later in life became a Judge for the AKC, ADRK, USRC, etc.
Anyway, one day she was going thru some of her boxes of belongings and showed me this thing. She had received it as a gift on one of her trips to Japan to judge dogs. It turn out it is a ceremonial garb for some sort of large breed over there that they show. It was placed on the winner and two handlers would walk the dog around for all to see. I understand that it took too because this particular breed (I dont remember the name), was ill tempered. They could walk the dog between them and keep it from attacking that way.
I thought it was so unique that I borrowed it one day and took Arko down to a park near you and shot a few shot of him with it on.
By the way, that gold on the collar is the real thing; not plating. Mucho bucks. |

It is with great regret that I announce the passing of the greatest effing dog to ever walk the land of mortals. the best breed of all, the mutt that you saw at the Humane Society while stopping by with a bud while he picked up his adoptee. The one with the big head and protruding ribcage that you picked up and couldn't put down because she clutched your neck with her too-big-for-her-body paws. I had the honor today of holding my Sophie's head while the vet put her down. She started vomiting last weekend, I took her in to get checked out, since she had chewed a shirt from the laundry basket, and the Xray showed a large mass, one that had displaced her stomach, and effectively rendered her unable to eat or drink. I'm perversely proud that the Xray also showed a button from one of my dress shirts. Gump-dog loved the laundry pile 
She picked me, I didn't pick her. I could run down a laundry list, no pun intended, of her faults, but she could have compiled an even bigger list for me. I loved her more than maybe any human being, I've been crying for 3 days since I got the diagnosis, and I'm proud of her - she fell asleep in front of the door, as always the Visa dog, everywhere you want to be. I owe her one, big. She saved me from a couple of bad decisions - yeah, I'd love to come home with you, but I have to walk my dog . . .
Godspeed gumpy dog.

I feel for ya! I lost my dog of fifteen years just last Feb. if you remember from all the posts. Aside from having another new pup to take my mind off it, the other best consolation was the support of my Badweb friends. A dog is a particularly hard loss, as there is no friend or family member so totally committed and dedicated as the family dog. Although it's hard, I recommend adopting another pup as soon as possible- and again, let the pup choose you. Funny you mentioned that because that's exactly how Lady chose us! Godspeed, Sophie! |

Thanks guys - I was going through my puppy pictures, and found one from one of her first days home with me - In the picture I was wearing the same t-shirt I pulled from the drawer yesterday to wear to the vets office. And my jeans were missing the left front pocket - I made the mistake of leaving a pack of gum in them one day.
Donn - they're having a grand old time, I'm sure. Neverending Kong, and all-you-can-eat laundry. I'm going to stay away from the shelter for a bit, because I'll take home a pack right now, but I found out they have a large number of Staff and Pit Bull mixes that people abandoned, most under a year old, that no one wants. All rescued from Camden, NJ and probably saved from a short life in a fighting pit. My home owner's insurance won't like it, but I'm probably going to give one a home. |

Been a fan of pugs for a long time. Had Boxers, Great Danes, Sheltsi's, etc.
Pugs have two speeds - play and sleep - not a mean bone in their body, and they love people - lol - so protection they aren't, but then I've always believed - don't worry about the dog - worry about the owner named Dawg - lol - I have some very old cats now, but in a few years I can see myself owning/owned by another pug - lol - clowned prince of dogs. I had a Black pug names Rad - his first years where with ole Buster - a pit mix who thought nothing would be better than eating Rad for dinner - so two years of this pup and Buster was fed up, so sis gave me Rad so Buster could get some peace - never could catch him - lol. So here I am with this abnormally muscled pug who's donut wags so fast he's a blur, and the only good thing was he was housetrained. Darned dog almost killed me once - I was picking him up for the first time , he's in the back, when I start, almost home and he jumps in my lap to lick my face - next thing I know my car is sliding sidewase - I finally stop with a tree less than a foot from me both in front and to my side - lol - my neighbor helped me pull it out with his tow truck - yeah I was lucky - and actually saved me once - funny story- my ex inlaws both fell sick at the same time - so we head to Sac. - both taking time off from our jobs - to take care of their 5 acre kennel and get jobs ourselves to cover us and not burden them - no biggy - had Rad about 3 months - both inlaws were totally shocked by his looks but understood once they heard his life story - lol - well its my first weekend in a big city for about 5 years and thinking nothing of it I grab the sunday paper and Rad and head for the Park. Place is a small and deserted so I let Rad out to run - a van with 8 hispanic gents pop out, I call Rad and leash him, but he's barking and pulling at the leash cause he sees new people to play with, and in spanish they are considering wether or not to rob me - a quick vote is taken and no they don't want to mess with the crazy pit - lol - I'd had serious trouble if they had known he just wanted to play, but the little bugger being hunched with muscle never looked like your average pug and that saved me a lot of hassle - a good dog, not a mean bone, and totally fun - who can ask for more.

Here is a shot of a face only a mother can love.
This is our Boston Terrier Dusty. We rescued Dusty from the vet 6 years ago.
While we were getting my wife's grandparents dog looked at by the vet (another Boston Terrier), the vet mentioned that she had Boston Terrier in back that someone had dropped off to be put down because they said she was mean and nasty.
She asked if we would be interested in maybe taking her home. The last thing I was wanting was a dog. Anyway, she brought Dusty out. The family feel in love with her instantly. Well, needless to say we brought her home.
I can't even begin to tell you what I feel for this dog, she is the most loving, well manered dog that I have ever owned. Very happy fate brought her into our lives!

Philly; sorry about Sophie - I know how you loved that dog. I remember the photo of you and her digging out the pool. She's in dog heaven now - unlimited cats to chase, chewing bones and slobbering in couches is ok and so on.

He's a picture of my Olde English Bulldogge Titan. He's just under two years old and a right at 95 pounds. I do competitive weight pulling with him in the International Weight Pulling Association out of Region 9 in Colorado. We've only been at it for 6 months, but he's already pulled as much as 2300 pounds and we'll look to compete nationally next year. Great dog - walks softly but carries a big stick as the old adage goes - protects the house and more importantly the shop like a wild thing, but then wants nothing more than to lay in my lap on the couch.
