Just bought a 99 m2 saturday, have been lurking here for a couple months. This place is great, just need time to sort through all the posts. Are there any books or magazines devoted to buells? Question 2 my gas cap is stuck the lever flips up and turns but the cap won't come out of the tank, anyone have this problem before? Will I have to take off the flange to fix this and if I do will I need a new gasket or can it be reused? Thanks, Brenden

There have been one or more incidences of the plastic cup/flange/thingie getting a warp in it and not clearing the metal ring, and a few others of the rubber funnel/thingie seemingly shrinking and preventing removal of the cap. I saw one Blast where the lever turned but the plastic part didn't. You might be able to wiggle it out, otherwise you'll probably need to remove the metal ring.

This isn't very common to happen though. I had to spray a little lube on my M2's cap once, but that's it.

Welcome, Brenden! I have a '98 that's recently developed that problem. At first, I thought it wouldn't come out at all. But since then, I've discovered the "art" of how to wiggle it out.

Mike... I haven't checked... to your knowledge, are the individual pieces you mentioned available and replaceable? At casual inspection, nothing appears wrong with mine. Obviously... something is. And it's a "mechanical" block of some sort... nothing a lubricant would help. Maybe it is warped... as you mentioned. I need to add that fix to my "things to do" list. Spring isn't far away!

the lever is attached to a threaded rod that passes through the cap and then into the inner cap, the part that rotates with the lever.

the inner cap and rod both have a square cross-sectioned area that allows the inner cap to rotate with the lever . . . .sometimes the square hole in the inner cap rounds out, generally due to some ham-fisted mech overtightening the nut that holds the inner cap to the threaded rod . . . .don't ask me how I know, or if the ham-fisted git is called John . . ..

not sure if the parts are available separately or not . .. . . parts book is at home

New gas caps are not all that pricey. The one I changed out was when a Blast owner went to a keyed gas cap and I took the old plastic bits off her keyless cap and put them onto the keyed assembly. I don't believe the individual parts are listed, but as we've learned here in the past, sometimes all you need is the actual part number and the parts are all of a sudden available individually.
On my M2 I just used my pocket knife to trim a bit of flash and material off to improve the clearances. And it was getting sticky even though there wasn't anything obvious that was making it sticky, but a few drops of BreakFree from the gun and bicycle cabinet fixed it right up.

Mike and all,

Just leave it, Drill a one inch hole in the top, then plug with a rubber bathtub stopper.

If stopper falls out use duct tape.!!!!!

ONLY KIDDING

I got a blow up picture of it somewhere or I can take mine of and photograph it so you can see how it works. You may end up taking the whole unit off the tank.

I have used the gasket a couple times and no leaks.

Thanks for the replies, I figured I'd have to take the flange off I was just worried that the gasket might not seal again. As far as I know I have the only Buell in our town of 25,000, there is a harley dealer 25 minutes away but don't know how Buell friendly they are. Thanks again, Brenden

Welcome, Brenden! Sometimes I have the opposite problem with my fuel cap. It's too loose. I can hear it rattling around and I can tell that it's loose. It isn't always loose. It depends on how much gas is in the tank, outside temp, humidity, etc. I've tried to tighten the nut but was afraid of becoming a ham-fisted git (my name is also John) so I've just lived with it.
