I ran into a possible deal on a 98 S1, well a package deal. The owner tore it apart and has not got it back together. He said that it was running when disassembled and he has all the parts. It has been apart a couple of years and stored in a shed. So what do you think a fair offer would be?

The NADA guide shows a 98 S1 worth $2985.00

But that's assuming it's fully assembled and in good working order.

Are you talking engine in a corner or pistons in a bucket torn apart? Basically it sounds like a basket case. Total up the parts you can verify and get a quick sale on and use that as your base line.

So is it worth buying and putting it back together for a rider?

Kind of depends on how much of it is still there, what work it really needs, and what price you get it at. A few folks have built up an S1 from scratch, picking up a frame here, a set of wheels there, an engine someplace else. If you've got the desire and if the price is comfortable for you then there is no reason not to. Besides, it could be a fun project and a fun bike to ride when you get it done.

One thing you'll have to do though is to post a series about the rebuild, showing pics of the before with parts scattered all over the floor, and then keep up updated as you go through the build process.

Ultimately it has to be your decision though, only you will know if it's worth it or not, and the dollars isn't always the determining factor when figuring out "worth".

If it's a basket case, you pay by the pound. If the engines been disassembled, something was/is wrong with it.

Offer him $100.

I know someone who paid very little for a basically complete and running M2 somewhat recently, like very little, like less than what a complete engine goes for, like way less.

$500 cash in the hand and a dinner at Denny's might surprise you.

Offer to "liberate" the bike for the owner.
Here's how it works. You take the bike and begin reassembly. The owner of the bike funds all parts and materials (as negotiated) you supply the labor.
What do you get? The thrill of the resurrection and full use of the running bike for a negotiated period of time.

A buddy of mine started doing this years ago when he realized that buying all the "good deals" in the world would leave him broke. This way he fulfills his need to tinker and create without the cash outlay.
