Buell is a big advertiser with MO, them picking the XB is akin to motorcyclist picking a Honda as best bike.

John Burns is irrefutably one of the most opinionated yet unbiased moto journos in existence. You may not agree with him, but he is in no one's pocket. He just doesn't like the SV. He happens to like the GSXR1000. Funny how if MO were placating Buell, they don't know about the now weeks old price reduction on 2003 model XB9's. Sorry Dyna, you are way off-base in your assessment this time. For one thing, Mr. Burns was dead on when he NAILED Suzuki for trying to pass off a MUCH cheaper open section frame as being superior to the SV's old closed section tubular frame.

Actually Blake I do agree with Burns this time. The older style SV's were much better looking in my opinion. The new ones look like shit.

The duc really does nothing for me as well.

Blake, I think MO as a whole is biased towards Buell. However Burns is usually pretty subjective & doesnt have any clear cut favorites other than the aforementioned GSXR1000.

Why cant you have it both ways????

That would be like saying that because Motorcyclist has a definate pro Honda stance if they have a glowing review of a Suzuki it must be BS.

Brand loyalty amongst bikers certainly brings out all the emotions! Gotta always defend whatcha ride, ya know. Everyone should lighten up... Buellers... and others. But I suppose if they did, there would go about half the content of many of the message boards.

Is it "brand loyalty" or just defending your motorcycle of choice? I think those are two very different things.

I agree with Burns, Suzuki tool a giant step backwards with the new SV650. Put a Ducati or Buell inspired steel tube trellis frame on it and that would have been a step forwards. The new frame doesn't know if it wants to be a beam or a truss. Heheheh... it's bi-structural. LOL!!! Oh man, I kill me.

I agree about the new SV. Too bad... I like some of the improvements... but the looks and frame just don't do it for me.

Okay... having (or feeling you have to)to defend your motorcycle of choice sometimes brings out the emotions... how's that? ;) I was referring to the forementioned SV board. Most people don't like to see their bike of choice play second or third fiddle. And to a Buell??? OMIGOSH!! LOL... well... things are changing out there... and people who put a lot of stock in what the journalists say, had better get used to it! Apparently... the new Buells are that good! :) And I still love my old hot rod Buell!

Well, Buell got a lot of positive press with the introduction of the S1...I think the fact that the 'tubers changed little over the years (and some reliability problems) are what made opinions wane on those bikes.

I imagine the XB's will go through the same. People like seeing new and exciting things every year.

While Burns's piece is his typical enjoyable opinionated lambast, I think he is right on the money.

When I bought my Cyclone, there were two bikes remaining on the short list. A used Cyclone or a used SV-650. Both were hovering around the same price if you were patient enough to wait for a motivated seller and were ready to move quickly.

In hindsight, even though I am sure I would have done nothing to the SV but ride it and change the oil, and even though there are few parts of my Cyclone I have not held in my hand during a repair at some point, I could not be happier that I got the M2 instead of the SV.

The SV really is a great cheap bike for the street. And as such is a great platform to work towards a track bike as well. But it does not change the fact that it is a cheap bike. I think that is the point Burns is making. If you are going to spend $5600 on an SV, then why not just spend $7895 on an XB9S. While it may not have a world class power to weight ratio, it does have several other world class aspects. The working mans exotic.

I have two friends with SV's. For both, the bike held their interest for about a season and a half. One now rides a Cagiva Raptor, the other is looking for his next bike.. he does not know what yet, but it ain't his SV.

Blake says: "I agree with Burns"

Is this the same BBS that bombasted Burns when he made a funny about Buell reliability? The same John Burns that has raced Buells? How things change.

Yes this is a BBS, but we are not all of one hive/BORG menatality. LOL! For the record, I didn't fault Mr. Burns for his tongue-in-cheek comments wrt Buell quality in Motorcyclist. I think another Buell board made a big stink about it though. Burnsie raced a Buell?? When/where? Do tell!

Blake; my memory is not good, but I thought you had a letter to the editor published over the last Burns fiasco, and you are right it was obviously Tongue-In-Cheek. Maybe it was someone over at ATC, I remember they were REALLY pissed about his comments, and Burns himself checked into the conversation and explained that he loves Buells and they should lighten up. Burns is a cookey (sp?) guy and knows it, I think he enjoys stirring the pot more than others.

About a week after the article appeared, the next issue of Roadracing World listed a race result where Burns had run an S1 in some race. He subbed for a friend I think was the story. I like the guy's writing, he would fit in well at SacBorg.

My letter was to Cycle-World wrt their biased characterization.

I've never been much of a fan of Motorcyclist though, and I did send them an email once criticizing their pro Japan Inc. bias, but it was not in reference to anything with which John Burns was involved. Kinda funny cause it was in response to their glowing characterization of the old SV650 versus a lackluster review of the XB9S.

Wow, I couldn't help but reread my correspondence with the Motorcyclist squid who replied to my email. I must say, I was in rare form. content

IIRC, Burns wrote about his race on an S1 in one of his "Bitter Little Man" columns. Apparently, he wrote, that the Motorcyclist office was offered a chance to race a Buell, and he was the only one to take the "bait"

From the SV board: "I really don't think that Buell will survive unless they unveil a radical new bike this year."
You mean a bike with fuel in the frame, oil in the swingarm, rim mounted brakes, and a zero lash never need adjustment drivetrain fer instance? Or how about a 1000cc bike the size of a 250 GP racer that out-handles everything in its class, stops on a dime and gives change?
Nah, I think he means they need to ditch the sportster lump for something lighter that revs better - oh wait. . .
Well, one of these days I guess we'll see something like that out of Buell, but for now I guess we'll have to get by with Juneau giving us year after year of IL4s with greasy chains and nothing new under the sun but the graphics. ;)
