Was finishing up putting a new fork on Beck's Blast this evening, something about that arrow on her front tire kept bothering me. Pulled my milk crate over and studied the situation carefully. The arrow on the bottom part of the tire was pointing forward, but after some calculating, I realized when it was on top, it would be looking backwards but that should make it average out. Then after just a bit more head scratching, I came to the conclusion, that directional Dunlop was only going the right direction when the bike was in reverse!!
Now, finally the questions.
Is it time to panic? Now that I know it will it fall apart?
They must have made it directional for some reason. Does it just grip better in one direction or can it affect the structural integrity of the tire?
Has 500 miles been enough to reverse the polarity and confuse it forever?
Or can we just turn it around and everything will be okay?
Why could I not notice that before I put it all back together?
Beck's getting braver by the minute, I don't want to lose her in one of those curves(you'd been proud to see how she deftly avoided that kamikaze possum the other night, but no marsupial meal for me),but I don't want to buy a tire for no good reason.
Does anybody know?

Lucky you!

Change out those stock Dunlops NOW! before they wear out and ruin your day, and replace them with Avon AM63 Vyper Strykes, 110/70/16 front, and 140/70/16 rear. They only cost around $100 for both and will last 5000 or more miles compared to the 3000 miles for the Dunlops. She will love you for it, because it will make the Blast handle just that much better.

Do the Swampy swing arm adjustment or get the stock sizes in that style.

I don't know anything about what happens when you mount a tire backwards, but it can't be good. If it were my girl, I'd buy her a new tire immediately so I know she's riding on the best I could give her (just in case 500 miles running backwards has screwed it up). Anybody know if this is just a traction issue or if it makes the composition of the tire unstable spinning it backwards that long? Help this guy out and maybe we can all learn something.

Get rid of the Dunlops too by the way. There are lots of better tires out there and it really does make a big difference in how well the bike handles when you're running good tires. My switch from Dunlops to Pirelli was like night and day and they last twice as long.

Oh My Swampy, now we've done it. Tried to paraphrase what you said,nearly got the swing arm adjustment myself
"WHATS WRONG WITH MY REAR? I don't think I need a bigger rear, mine's big enough".
"Oh, no darlin, you rear's perfect, it's the rear tire on your motorcycle he's talking about".
I don't think she's convinced, I'll have to look up the Swampy swing arm thing though, it does sound like the stockers are not most folks favorite. How much difference does a bigger rear make? I mean on motorcycles, like I said, her's is perfect. The being easier to handle parts perked her up though, she thought I was still talking about motorcycles, thought best to quit before I got too far behind.

Mounting the tire backwards could:

1. Tire could not grip as well in rain. Most treads are designed pull water away from the tire. Flip the direction and you could get less traction or possibly be pushing water under your tire.

2. Could fall apart, yes fall apart. Some tires are constructed in a way to take forces in one direction. Reverse the forces being applied, and it cold rip the tire apart. Mostly seen on rear tires.

Ahhh! what I was looking to find out,just what I was afraid of. We better park Ms Becky before disaster strikes, and start scouting for tires. I'll read some tire threads and get some more opinions and see what we come up with. I appreciate it.

Now who's gonna tell her she can't ride till I get her some tires on there? It's gonna be bad.
