My Brother and I rode from NH down to the CT shore yesterday to visit our Mom. He rides a 900 Monster and isn't a Duc snob (also has a 9 second Suz GS 1100 drag bike). He never cared for or knew much about Buells, but since I have had my S3 for 6 months, he has let the occasional miniscule compliment fly. Conversely I don't flaunt the fact that it is quicker, faster, more comfortable (especially 2 up), handles as well (IMO) and simpler to maintain as I know it will only push him to defend his Duc.
Our older brother was there too and had not seen my bike yet. So while he was drooling on it, he had some typical questions about the usual Buell features- the rear suspension action, the belt drive and the single disk. When I explained it was done to lower unsprung weight and stops just as well as dual disks, the Duc riding brother said "they can't cool as well under repeated use" and " you don't see black heat marks on my brakes".....I said that yes I have some glaze on my rotor, but that it was from the wrong pad's for the way I ride.
Is he right?
It's ok with me if my generation of single disk is or isn't as good as his std. issue Brembo's, but if they are as good or better, where can I find the proof to show him?

He is right, about the cooling..

he has 2 discs to disperse the heat, while we only have one..

NOW, IF if has the 4 pot calipers, you are correct, that there is more clamping force..

Add to that, that our rotors are larger in diameter than regular rice rotors, you are also increasing the braking force..

For repeated hard use, yeah, he has a better set-up...alot less fade, etc..

BUT, due to the nature of our 6 pot calipers, and larger rotors, we have more braking power...though, it tends to glave the rotors, at least, I have since day one on mine...

So, that is about as much proof as you will get, just use physics...more caliper pistons, larger diameter rotor..more braking power...

One disc, less cooling ability..

my wife owns a Ducati M620, model of 2004.
It has the Brembo dual discs, and they are damn good brakes. very ggod feel, very predictable, work well hot, cold and in the wet. every bit as good as the XB.

Don't some of the Monster models come with a single front disk?

Anyway, the Ducati Brembos are pretty much "as good as it gets" for racy street bike. Ducati uses very good components, but there is a trade off there, if you are not racing the Buell but just sort of crusing through the twisties, do you really need racing brakes? If a single disk brakes, say, 80% as well, but is 50% lighter, is it "worth it" to have only a single? For street fun, (for me) yes; for racing, maybe the dual is the "best".

I tried googling for stopping distances- does anybody have this for the S3 or any of the tubers and for the M620-750-900?
Brembo Brakes are a benchmark, just curious how we compare.

yes, Brembo are a benchmark...excellent brakes...

BUT, has anyone compared out Nissin with anything else out there?

Havent gotten as far as direct comparison, but, they look remarkable similar to the clampers used on a era literbike or GSX1300R(Busa)...

Our Nissin just haev Buell stamped on them, but, the master doesnt...
