I have used a 2 amp car charger to charge just enough to start the bike, but I'm with Jersey, not really a good idea. |

I would suggest using 5th gear. Remember to keep your hand on that clutch! If you're not in a hurry, I would suggest .5A for a day or so. Measure the voltage of the battery on the terminals, make sure you don't get it above 14.5V. |

Most definitely CHARGE the battery before starting, roll starting or jump starting the bike. a few hours charging at 2 amps will in no way harm your battery, whereas the full output of the 38 amp Buell charging system will cause a great deal of unnecessary stress to battery, regulator, and all the overworked connectors along the way. it is generally a bad idea to attempt starting any vehicle with a very deeply discharged battery, in emergencies one does what is required, but if you have the luxury of time, always charge the battery as much as possible first. if you must jump start from another vehicle, always hook up the cables and allow the discharged battery to charge for ten minutes or so before cranking. as far as push starting, the buell will will fire right up IF you have a good hot battery, and remember unless you have rewired the bike, to get ignition, you also have to run fuel pump, taillamp, and headlight, so battery must produce around 7 amps and at least 11 volts even to push start the bike, a very unlikely scenario for a deeply discharged battery. |

These type of batteries don't appreciate being left uncharged for long. They start developing a crust on their plates that will diminish their capacity. Sometimes they can be recovered by a couple of discharge/charge cycles. I would think a maximum in each way may help the process. Several years ago I did a battery search to find info. for gell-cells at work and found a tremendous amount of good information about charge rates, storage etc. The thing about batteries is that one can last several years and an identical one may last a month with the same use. |
