I'm am thinking about putting the 55 tooth rear sprocket on my Buell.I have the 29 tooth sprocket on the front allready.I have some motor work done so its far from stock.I'm just wondering how much different it will pull,if I will loss gobs of lower torque,to have a bigger top end.A friend has a Baker six speed on a Buell basically identical to my set-up,and I'm thinking this may help me keep up with him on the top side. | ||

Assuming you have the power to pull 6,800 rpm in every case, this is what your actual top speed would be with the following gearing: Stock Buell 1:1 fifth gear ratio: Stock U.S. gearing (27x61t) = 138.8 mph Full Euro gearing (29x55t) = 165.3 mph Euro front (29t) x U.S. rear (55t) = 149 mph U.S. front x Euro rear = 153.9 mph Baker Six Speed sixth gear 0.85:1 ratio: Stock U.S. gearing = 163.3 mph Full Euro gearing = 194.5 mph Euro front x U.S. rear = 175.3 mph U.S. front x Euro rear = 181.1 mph (Message edited by Ray_Maines on June 21, 2005) | ||

If you have some serious torque numbers you might get away with the 27 front 55 rear combo.Ask any of the european guys and they were always griping about the lack of power--and trying to buy our old pulleys.My last one went to Australia. The problem you will run into is the axle adjustment runs out --on the steel swingarm anyway---before you have proper tension.I know the parts book list some european only parts that probably do the trick.I had this combo on the bike for Bonneville and we made some spacers for the adjuster bolts.And with the Baker it went 177.7 so your numbers are pretty close---course it made almost 180 HP,too. | ||

rich: unless you are running some extremely high compression ( and methanol for fuel) OR have a very large bore and or stroke engine of at least 88 inches, then gearing your bike any higher will drastically impede performance. what i mean to say is that gearing for a top speed of 170 mph when you only have Horsepower to push 130 mph will make a very sluggish bike. you will have 883 sportsters passing you. | ||

I've got a bigger pulley on the back of my Euro M2. With the standard pulley 5th is nearly redundant unless you do a lot of high speed long trips. |
