Since the introduction of the CityX, I've been pondering the hand guards. Something didn't seem quite right. It wasn't until just recently that I figured it out. Everything else on the bike was designed to have mulitple functions: - The frame is also the fuel tank. - The swingarm is also the oil reservoir. - The cooling fan is also a security system (from buell.com: "And as and added benefit, it freaks out punk kids who try to sit on your ride when you run in for a cuppa joe." ) The hand guards serve only one purpose, and even then, their most useful time is for a month or two at the beginning and ending of the riding season, when they keep the cold air off your hands. For those of you whose four seasons are Spring, Summer, Death Valley, and Hell, they serve their purpose keeping the hot air off your hands for a couple months in the middle of the riding season. The hand guards don't fit in with the philosopy of the rest of the bike. How do we solve this? Well, I'm glad you asked. Integrate the front turn signals into the hand guards. This would get the turn signals out farther so it would be easier to discern which direction is being signalled, and it would clean up the look of the forks. Cool, right? But wait...there's more. Integrate the mirrors into the hand guards, too. This would get them out wider so they would provide more of a view behind the rider and less of a view of the rider's shoulder and elbow pads. So there you have it. Three functions for one component--an engineering trifecta. |

Maybe some clip-on bike mirror? Or bolt a set of 3rd eye mirrors to the hand guard. Ok, now I'm going to go to the garage to scrounge. DBird |

Add storage places for sunglasses and a tool kit too... The gaurds just don't look right to me. I am all about function, but at what cost? Those things are just ugly. |

Me? I am all over the hand guards.....like the seating position (which I am preparing to take through the "14 hours day test" you really can't understand how well these work until you ride the bike. I'm kinda thinking about gluing them full of fuzz to act as a wind buffer. They are simply too cool....er, perhaps that should be "non-cool". Little velcro flaps on the back for glove storage? Who knows what the mind of Buell engineers will bring us. I'm not exactly sure what I'd do, but I love the idea of an ad campaign "Improved handguards for 2006". I'm thinking about making mine removable so that I can wear them throughout the day to protect my hands no matter where I wander.... Court |

They are easily adaptable for most bar end mirrors. You may or may not need the plugs, depending on how your bar ends mount. I am running my 9sx with 3rd eye bar ends and the plugs, only minor mods necessary. |

Now let's see, we'll put the turn signals in them and then the mirrors too, so when you bump them on the garage wall squeezing out, we can fleece you for about $150.00 each. Oh, the opportunity. the part like this does a fourth job...makes us rich!!! |

While you are at it, add a full fairing, wind shield, doors, and a trunk. You could have yourself a nice Geo Metro |

Anony, Anyone who would "bump them on the garage wall squeezing out" is either a. exiting their garage in the wrong direction or b. not giving their Buell the respect (and room) it deserves. To add a teeny bit more seriousness to a half-serious thread, it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a breakaway mount for the mirror. Even the Geo Metro has those. And yes, I considered the cost of the part and how it would be one of the first things to break, but that didn't fit in with the philosophy of my post. |

Court, When you make them removable, you can market them to zoos as "knuckle protectors for primates." |

The more I look at these handgaurds the more I want a pair for my S3. Do you think they'd fit? Rob |

I've got a pair on order for my Blast. The girl at the parts counter pulled out the CityX parts book to find the part # for them, then pulled out the Blast's book to cross match the part #s of the handlebar control consoles to see if they'd mount on the Blast. The same consoles are on both motorcycles, so they'll mount on my Blast no problem. If you can do that for your S3, then it's guaranteed to work. |
