Buell Bros:
The mechanical speedometer cable on my 1998 S3T snapped at the end and needs to be replaced. I see the P/N for the '97 was Y0505.9, but the P/N for the '98 was Y0505.J, which suggests they are somewhat different, maybe length? Anyway, the cable seems to measure ~38" and is a typical old school Harley cable.

Any reason an aftermarket Harley cable like this wouldn't do the trick (i.e., is there a trick)?

A stock Harley-Davidson speedometer cable can work. I have cleaned my speedometer drive gear with de-greaser, then lubricated with chain oil, as the unit can not be easily taken apart. see;

The 1997 and 1998 are the same length.
The 1998 dash has a greater angle mount than the 1997 dash. To help the cable bend properly, the top end of the cable is pre-curved with a hard rubber like coating. That is the difference.
I have put a double thickness of shrink tubing, about 6-8 inches in length, on a 1997 cable to help it to bend properly on the 1998 dash.
