My speedo quit working today. I have not taken anything apart just yet. What normally causes this - broken cable ?

Also look at the speedo drive. The tit that goes in the hole in the wheel and turns the drive will break off.

Is the speedo cable a sportster or Buell specific?

The part number out of the S2 parts book is 67100-94Y.According to my friend google it has been updated to Y0505.9 and fits S1,S2 and S3 tube frame Buells.I don't no know if it fits any HD models.

The Buell cable is a few inches shorter than the Sportster cable. That being said, I used a Sportster cable because it was $20 and in stock locally rather than $35 after shipping for the S2 cable.

Speedometer drive. While your at it, check the bearings. If they are starting to go, the slightest wiggle out of true can cause the effeminate and fragile tang to break off the drive. That's when your speedometer stops working.

What could happen next is the speedometer cable can become wrapped around the axle. This happened to me twice before I realized that speedometer issue was bigger than a speedometer issue. I could have gone down both times. Once in Death Valley, the other time on my way back from Bonneville. Both epic rides. I had to cut the cable with wire cutters.

Don't put this off, get to it right away. Inspect your bike thoroughly.

You can order all the stuff from American Sport Bike.
