When did they start putting the updated crank seals in? I thought it was 2001 but I just took my 2001 X1 apart and it had the old single lip style. It was rock hard too.

I was unaware that they were updated. I just thought they failed and were replaced.
I guess that means the sportsters were upgraded too?

The old one-lip ones have a metal shell; the two-lip style looks like black rubber from the outer side. I think they have the same part number. The change came sometime in the 2001 model year; not all 2001 engines got the new style.

You must be careful when installing them not to seat it too deep or it will rub on the rotating crank.

Thanks guys. I guess mine must have been one of the earlier ones in 2001. I can't complain, that seal lasted 60K and only started leaking about 2-3K ago.

My 2001 had the old style. The rubber just gets brittle with age. You'll see when you pull it out.

Not bad. Mine lasted 45K. I guess it was replaced with the newer one?
It was about the last thing that my extended warranty covered : )
