i recently acquired a '98 s3t which is really starting to grow on me---the uly stays home now most of the time!! it runs great unless i accelerate at wide open throttle and then it misses badly starting around 5k rpm. i think it's electrical in nature, maybe a coil going bad, but i thought i would ask your collective wisdom for advice before i start tearing into it.

any input is much appreciated!!

thanks
frank

Check the plug wires and the plugs. The visual inspection of the wires is not always conclusive.

Does it happen when you accelerate hard/quickly? If you accelerate slowly will it go past 5000 rpm?

yes--it will go past 5k if done slowly--some slight misfiring, but not as bad as when accelerating hard.

The Cam Position Sensor has seen 14 winters and may have begun to fail. First swap a known good coil and wires in to eliminate the easy possibility. The coil wires have been known to chafe and fail under the tank, too. Only sure way to eliminate that possibility is to run a new wire to the module and disconnect the original.

Another item on the X1/S3's that causes odd symptoms is the head temp sensor.
Check the reading using ECM Spy and make sure they change as the bike warms up.

i appreciate all the ideas. in looking it over carefully last night, i noticed that there seems to be slight discoloration around the rear head gasket--could a head gasket leak cause this?
