I just bought picking it up this weekend..has been sitting for almost a year, issues are needs a muffler, but far worse the bike will not idle only runs if you got the throttle engaged a litle,as soon as you let go of the throttle it shuts off. it started smoking out thru the carb after i had it runin for a min of course with the throttle engaged it wont even idle...i picked up a carb gasket kit as i intend to clean it up..any suggestion on what else to look for if the problem persist?? anyone in the tampa bay area that know these cyclones well??

low speed jet plugged or float is sticking. Todays gas turns to crap fast. When storing my bike I shut the fuel off and run till the carb is mt. You can try this now. Ive had it help with a stuck float or plugged needle valve. Most likely the jets are plugged up with junk.

Enrichener stuck on? How are your plugs looking? This smoke out of the carburetor, is it white and gasoline-smelly?

The carburetor cleaner in a spray can will work fine. No telling how old that gas is, I'd change it. Repair manuals abound for your bike; most running gear components are shared with the Sportster. There's a Tampa area group; contact Buellistic via pm. I have a spare carburetor if it really baffles you.

You might want to change your intake seals while you're at it, those tend to go bad, especially if the bike has been sitting awhile. Get the good James blue ones, they are the same as a Sportster and seem to last a lot longer.

Get a service manual AND a parts manual. Either here or Ebay has them. Cheap is 15-20 bucks but the majority seem to be 35-45. They are worth it when you do your own maintenance.

Here's the carb section from the S1 service manual that's in the Knowledge Vault.

Assuming your M2 has the stock Keihin carb, this should tell you what you need to know.

yeah im running into the same problem tony, bought my s1 early this year and have yet to find a new header/muffler combo.. i finally found a stock muffler to put on so i guess im stuck with the stock headers aswell . My carb was all gunked up too. took awhile to get it fixed.. then somemore stuff started breaking after it was running again, fixed that and my bike seems to run good now. it had 3,200 miles on it when i bought it , now has 7,600 :P

Wow so I'm up for a task to look for headers..so no one makes race headers right now for the 97-98 m2?? Mine has no muffler bought it like that. I thought of buying the ones for the later m2 n have my mufflers shop sleeve the collector dnt know if that would be the best idea since I am trying to locate race headers

I put a late model Buell race can on my S2. 2" rear-facing collector on the header. I bought a 2"ID to 2.5"OD exhaust adaptor at an auto parts place, and a clamp. Clamped the spacer to the header, clamped the muffler to the spacer, and bolted the rear of the muffler to the mounts.

You should be able to find a Vance & Hines SS2R for the 2" collector...if you want loud. Sometimes Borlas pop up on ebay. Also check out American Sport Bike, Al might still have something that will fit a stock 2" header.
