I was wondering what the crew here on badweb preferred as a work stand for their bikes. I have A run of the mill under bike lift that was designed for bikes without an underslung shock and exhaust. I fabbed up (out of wood) a 'platform' that holds the bike (S2) in areas that won't crush the shock or muffler. But, it is not the best and even though it gives great access to the rear wheel, it can be a little tippy. So the question I have for the group is what style/kind of lift do you prefer and why? I ask as I am in the market to upgrade,

Thanks!

I bought a used Handy lift for 300 bucks. One of the best things I ever bought. I use a junkyard scissor lift with it to lift bikes.

I bought a Harbor Freight lift with a $220 off coupon. I then bought a Condor trailer stand to replace the risky wheel clamp that came with the lift.

Pit bull front stand and the rear stand that lifts from the rider pegs. Can't remember what the brand name is right now. I think I bought the last one from American Sport Bike though.

Basic swingarm and fork lifts, rear has a padded "L" shaped plate that goes under the swingarm, front has tabs to fit the bottom of the fork (see my add in the classifieds for a picture).

I want to get a head-stock lift for the front, seems to be much more useful since you can service forks with this sort of lift.

Those are the ones I use. They come with spool or swing arm ends and the front comes with tree or fork attachments. Mine is up on them now.

I got a used older version of the T-Rex stands, off Craiglist, he was like half a mile from me. The rear has rubber L's to catch the swingarm, and the front is convertible to lift by fork bottoms, or by under the steering stem. Good deal for the money I think. Then I got a used Powerstands work table that is just a table about 18" high.
The bike can go up on the table and then up on the lift-stands, and them my aching back isn't quite so aching. But it's pretty much a two or three person job to get it up there. I would really rather have gotten the "Bike-lift" blue model, but too much $. There's a review site here that reviews some:

I didn't know about Handy going under, I guess another victim of the bad economy.

Agree on the Handy. I had to settle for a HF model when Handy pulled the plug.
The front clamp is a bit on the lame side. I did a few mods to make it better.

"Handy is still in business."

You are right, these people bought the assets.

I love my Harbor Freight table lift which I upgraded with a front tire vise like the more expensive lifts have.

I use a handy lift and it's a lifesaver.
My bendover isn't working all that well these days and if I have to get down low to work on a bike, I gotta call for help to get back up.
Anyone born close to the middle of the last century can probably relate.

Any platform or table type of lift is going to be a big help, if you have room for it. Where I lived before I had it in my 2-car garage and I had to park one of the bikes on it if I wanted everything inside. (Which I DO!)

I used a Pitbull fork stand and a swingarm lift to do tire or wheel work on the RS or S2T we had. Same for the kids' Ninja.

The under frame jack lifts are great for Harleys, but are really dicey for supporting Buells. Better to hang 'em from the rafters.
Preferably strong rafters.
