A little help here my friends.
Please educate me. I have my old faithful '97 S3T. My exhaust headers are looking pretty brown. I'm thinking with a color like that they must be carbon steel.
(They were bronze to start) First, are they carbon?
If Stainless, I can polish them up but if carbon theyll just corrode up again. So, Is Hi-Temp coating my best bet?

If it were "my" bike i would take em off and send them to AL @ American Sport Bike and have him ceramic coat them in black. Or try and get a new aftermarket system, I Don't know what they make for your model.

Not all early headers were stainless. Many early ones were steel.

i know my buddys 97s3t is stainless and its the original one maybe others were steel hmm?

only steel ones were on the m2, the s3 had stainless. You can polish them to make them look new again

All S3 / S3T factory headers are stainless. You can polish by hand, have them electro polished (cleaned) or coat. That's about the order of cost also. If you polish them they will go back to gold, then to bronze, and if you totally ignore them, and run a bit hot, they will go to really dark brown/black.
The only bike with a mild steel header was the early M2, as a cost consideration. Exactly the same shape as the stainless, but black painted steel.

If you really want to put your mind at ease grab a magnet. We had door hinge rods at a place I used to work at and some were stainless and some weren't. A magnet was the easiest way to be sure.

depends on what kind of stainless, Ky. All stainless commercially available has some amount of corbon content. 304 has very little, 201 has more (those are the 2 most common). Anybody know what the tuber ss headers were made of?

as a fun little exercise: notice how bbq grills a couple years ago were all ss, now they have painted panel and stuff? Ss prices have gone up a bunch in the last couple years. Take your magnet to Home Depot- it will stick to most ss bbq grills! They are using 201 now in place of 304....and they will rust.

The Jet hot coating doesn't change color,ever. I couldn't be happier with the finish on my FORCE pipe. Hit it with some Mothers and its a work of art again.
